Nurse Residency Program

Providing a Solid Foundation

Greenville Health System is committed to providing new graduate nurses with a solid foundation to launch their nursing career.

Our residency program combines foundational and specialty specific clinical core curriculum, quality classes, simulation, one-on-one skills validation, hands-on application with clinical mentors and professional development.

GHS offers six residency programs each with numerous cohorts starting throughout the year. The Nurse Residency Program supports GHS’ eight campuses and is a system-wide new graduate program. Application deadlines and start dates vary.

Our nurse residency programs include:

Critical Care Academy
This program provides a broad exposure to the varied critical care sub-specialties available at Greenville Health System. The Critical Care Academy prepares new graduates through instructor-led critical care systems based on the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) curriculum modules, simulation and hands-on clinical experience with mentors trained in these specialty areas. Participation in professional development courses and peer support groups helps to cultivate competent professional nurses who are ready for the challenge of critical care.

Critical Care Academy is available at the following locations:


Emergency Department Academy 
This program serves to transition new graduate nurses from students to competent professional nurses in the specialty of Emergency Medicine. New graduates will evolve into quality emergency nursing professionals through a combination of quality classes, the Emergency Nursing Association (ENA) Emergency Nursing Orientation curriculum, simulation, one-on-one skills validation and hands-on application with expert clinical mentors and educators.

Emergency Department Academy is available at the following locations:


Comprehensive Acute Care Academy
This academy encompasses acute care and specialty nursing care to a variety of units across GHS’ eight campuses.  The Comprehensive Acute Care Academy serves to transition new graduate nurses from an academic setting to competent, professional nurses in specialized nursing care. This academy is more than a traditional orientation program. Clinical content and experience is diverse and includes the areas of oncology, orthopaedics, cardiac and surgical services. Educators and clinical experts teach and mentor new graduate nurses through core curriculum classes, simulation and hands-on learning experiences. Along with professional development and a supportive group-setting, graduates of this academy will emerge as confident and well-rounded in their specialty.

Perioperative Services Academy
This academy serves to transition new graduate nurses from students to competent professional nurses in the specialty of Perioperative Nursing. New graduates will evolve into quality perioperative nursing professionals through a combination of quality classes, the Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN) core curriculum, simulation, one-on-one skills validation and hands-on application with expert clinical mentors, educators and professional development guides. Perioperative nursing provides a diversity of cases and the opportunity to work as a team member while keeping focus on one patient at a time. Graduates of this academy will be well-rounded nurses equipped to handle the complexities of working in the operating room while providing care at the highest standard.

Perioperative Services Academy is available at the following locations:


Women’s Services Academy
This program provides comprehensive exposure to the various specialties of women’s services at Greenville Health System. Women’s Services Academy prepares new graduate nurses in the spectrum of perinatal care and the sub-specialties of women’s services, including mom/baby, through instructor-led curriculum, simulation skills and hands-on clinical experiences with experts who are trained in this specialty area. Along with professional development and peer support, graduates of this academy will emerge as competent, confident and well-rounded in their specialty.

Children’s Services Academy
This program serves to promote the transition of new graduate nurses from students to competent, professional nurses in the specialty of children’s services or pediatric nursing. New graduates will evolve into competent nursing professionals in the specialized care of children whose age ranges from neonate to young adult. Children’s services academy utilizes a combination of quality classes, neonatal and pediatric core curriculum, simulation, and hands-on application with clinical experts  and educators to facilitate clinical and professional development.

Applying for a spot in our Residency program is simple. Follow these instructions to submit your application today.

  • Select the Nurse Resident position for each Cohort-specific Residency Program
  • Choose and complete the applicable residency application on-line
  • Please upload a current resume with your application

Your application for the Nurse Residency program will not be considered complete without the pre-interview documentation and a resume uploaded with your application.

To be considered:

  • You must be a registered nurse with a current South Carolina licensure prior to starting the residency
  • You must have an Associate or Bachelor of Science in nursing, GPA of 3.0 or higher is preferred

If selected for this opportunity, you must commit to and sign a contract for two years post-residency completion of full-time employment at Greenville Health System in a nursing department of your academy.

Each academy is lead by nursing educators with a vast range of experience and expertise in your chosen specialty. All of our nurse educators who serve in our academies have a love and a desire to teach. Along with mentoring new graduate nurses, our educators are integrally involved in all aspects of the academy experience.
