The Greenville Health System (GHS) Board of Trustees is a volunteer board. It is made up of 12 members representing Greenville County, as well as two seats that are outside of the county.
James C. Morton Jr. is Chair of the Board of Trustees. He is a retired vice chairman of Nissan North America, with 30 years of experience working for international companies in senior management positions. He currently is under contract with various companies in an advisory role for government relations and community affairs.
Mr. Morton received a law degree from the University of Missouri School of Law and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Westminster College. He also served in the United States Army, where he was awarded a Bronze Star during his service in South Vietnam, and in the Missouri Army National Guard.
As senior vice president for Finance and Administration at Nissan, he focused on Nissan’s federal, state and local government and community affairs activities. Nissan’s diversity efforts were a particular concern in both the communities where Nissan had a significant presence and internally.
He served on the board of the National Urban League for three years. In addition, he has served on the boards and in leadership positions with the S.C. Chamber of Commerce, California Chamber of Commerce, Greenville Tech Foundation, S.C. Ports Authority, Association of International Automobile Manufacturers and the Hollings Cancer Center at the Medical University of South Carolina.
Margaret L. Jenkins is Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees. She is a former marketing executive and current marketing and branding consultant. Based in Greenville, Ms. Jenkins has an extensive background in consumer marketing and retail advertising. She is the former senior vice president and chief marketing officer of Spartanburg-based Denny’s Corp., the nation’s largest family restaurant company. She served in that role from 2002 to 2007.
A native of Los Angeles, Ms. Jenkins studied journalism and communications at the University of Colorado in Boulder. She received public company certification from UCLA’s Anderson School of Management in 2007.
Ms. Jenkins also is the former chief marketing officer of El Pollo Loco restaurants, a 400-unit Southern California-based company. She has held various senior management positions with Taco Bell Corp. and PepsiCo International Foodservice. Ms. Jenkins was executive vice president of client services for Morrison, Lee & Stevens Advertising in Irvine, California, and has held management positions with advertising agencies in California and Colorado, assigned to such well-known brands as Sunny Delight Beverages, the Atlantic Richfield Company (ARCO) and McDonald’s.
Ms. Jenkins recently completed an eight-year term as a corporate director of the PVH Corp., an international apparel manufacturer and retailer. She was one of the few female corporate board members of a Fortune 500 company. With over $8 billion in annual revenues, PVH owns Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, Van Heusen, Arrow, Izod, Speedo, Warner’s and Olga, and is the world’s largest shirt company. Ms. Jenkins sat on PVH’s nominating and governance and corporate social responsibility committees.
She is an avid supporter of the visual and performing arts and is a former trustee and vice chair of the Peace Center for the Performing Arts in Greenville and a former trustee and member of the executive committee of the Greenville Symphony Orchestra.
Benjamin B. Waters III is Secretary of the Board of Trustees and the retired president of Cunningham-Waters Construction Co., Inc., in Greer, which he helped grow from a $500,000 company to a $10 million company.
Mr. Waters earned a BA from The Citadel and an AS in civil engineering technology at Greenville Technical College. Waters also served as an officer in the United States Army for nearly a decade.
Civic experience includes serving as a board member and president of the Greer Lions Club, director of the Greer Chamber of Commerce, and director and chairman of the board for the Citizens Building and Loan Association. He is a member and committee chair of the Governor’s Workforce Investment Board. He also has served on boards affiliated with Greenville Technical College and North Greenville University, as well as serving on the Governor’s Education Taskforce for Excellence in Public Education.
He has received numerous awards and honors, including being inducted into The Citadel’s Arland D. Williams Society in recognition of his outstanding humanitarian service to the community. He is a past deacon chair and Sunday School teacher at First Baptist Church of Greer.
Dell Baker is a CPA who joined Bradshaw, Gordon & Clinkscales LLC in 1988. He became a partner in 1999.
Mr. Baker graduated from Bob Jones University with a BS degree in accounting. He received a Master of Professional Accountancy degree from Clemson University.
From 1986 to 1994, Mr. Baker was a member of the S.C. House of Representatives and served on the Medical, Municipal and Military Affairs Committee as well as various appointments to Special and Joint Committees of the House and Senate. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Greenwood Genetic Center.
James F. Barker, FAIA, came to Clemson University from Kingsport, Tennessee, as an architecture student and track athlete. After graduating from Clemson, he spent several years as a practicing architect, at Mississippi State University and Clemson as a faculty member and dean, and was named Clemson president in 1999.
He led Clemson through an era of dramatic growth in academic quality and reputation, moving from the third tier to #20 among national public universities, according to US News & World Report, and gaining Clemson recognition for its commitment to undergraduate teaching and the strong return on investment in tuition that graduates enjoy. At the start of 2014, he returned to the Architecture faculty at Clemson and was named President Emeritus.
Mr. Barker is a leading voice in higher education for South Carolina and the nation. He has served as president of the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and as chair of the NCAA Division I Board of Directors. He also served on the board of The Shaw Group.
He earned a master’s degree in architecture and urban design from Washington University in St. Louis and is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects and the Institute for Urban Design.
Jim enjoys traveling, skiing, drawing, painting and spending time with wife Marcia and their grandchildren.
The Rev. Sean Dogan is Senior Pastor at Long Branch Baptist Church, where he has served since 1977. Under his visionary leadership, the church has grown to over 1,200 weekly attendees. He recently led a $2.4 million building project and a $50,000 environmental improvement project.
He also has initiated many programs that have positively affected the local community, including a partnership with Harvest Hope Food Bank to provide service to 75 families in the Greenville Sullivan Community, monthly farmers market for the community that has developed into a mobile market, scholarship programs and business grant opportunities, and a Job Readiness Program for the church and community.
The Rev. Dogan currently is involved with the following organizations and boards or committees: United Way Board of Trustees; United Way Faith Based Round Table; United Way Community Impact Cabinet, S.H.A.R.E. Board of Directors; Greenville Forward Board; LiveWell Greenville Leadership Team (Executive Committee); Senior Action Board of Trustees; Year of Altruism Faith Based Roundtable; UNCF Upstate (Past Chair); and the N.A.A.C.P.
Listed among the “Best and Brightest Under 35” by Greenville Business Magazine (2010), he is a graduate of the Riley Institute Diversity Leadership Initiative (Spring 2011).
Anna Kate Hipp, a seasoned philanthropist who has made volunteerism for education and environmental issues her life’s work, is on the boards of Environmental Law Center, Greenville Health System, TreesGreenville, Carolina Foothills Garden Club and Slow Food Upstate.
A Mary Baldwin College (Staunton, Virginia) alumnus and Trustee Emeriti, she served on the Board of Trustees for 25 years—five years as the first alumnae chair—receiving an honorary PhD and the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award from the college.
Instrumental in the development of Greenville’s Falls Park on the Reedy River, Ms. Hipp co-chaired the effort that raised $3.2 million from the private sector to form the Falls Park Endowment. In 2004, she co-founded Liberty Fellowship, an incubator for exemplary leadership in South Carolina.
Past board memberships include the Peace Center for the Performing Arts, Community Foundation of Greenville, The Greenville County Museum of Art Association, Brookgreen Gardens, Friends of the Reedy River and The Pawleys Island Beautification Foundation.
An instrument-rated pilot, Ms. Hipp has logged almost 3,500 hours and flown in seven all-women air races.
Richard A. Phillips lives in Walhalla and owns Padgett Business Services, an accounting and income tax preparation firm. Mr. Phillips is licensed by the state as an accounting practitioner and by the United States Treasury as an enrolled agent. Before starting his Padgett Business Services office 27 years ago, he worked in manufacturing accounting for Coats & Clark in Toccoa, Georgia, and Square D Company in Seneca, South Carolina.
He has a BBA in accounting from the University of Georgia.
Mr. Phillips has served on the Board of Trustees of Oconee Memorial Hospital in Seneca for the past six years. In his last year on the board, he served as its chairman and had an active role in Oconee Memorial Hospital becoming part of Greenville Health System.
In addition, he actively supports Volunteers in Medical Missions, American Red Cross, The Salvation Army and many other local charities.
Ruth M. Richburg is a retired biology schoolteacher with the Greenville County Schools.
Ms. Richburg has a master’s of education degree in biological science from South Carolina State College and a BS from Bennett College. She also has completed additional graduate courses in biology from Clemson University.
She has served on boards or held leadership positions with groups such as the YWCA, American Association of University Women and GHS Minority Advisory Council. She also has served on the Greenville Habitat for Humanity Selection Committee and United Negro College Fund Upstate Advisory Committee.
Michelle B. Seaver is President, Greenville County, of United Community Bank. Before working at UBCI, she held the title Wealth Market Leader with TD Bank, N.A., The South Financial Group-Carolina First Bank Greenville.
Ms. Seaver has a BS in accounting from the University of South Carolina.
She has served on boards or held leadership positions with groups such as GHS Women’s Advisory Council, Greenville Community Foundation, Greenville Women Giving, YWCA Dream Achieves and United Way of Greenville County.
Lisa H. Stevens’ career in Greenville began as a city planner with Greenville County, which led to her being involved in a number of local and state boards. While serving on the South Carolina State Board of Education, she became acutely aware that the most effective way for education to improve in this state is from inside the classroom. This led her to assemble the team of community volunteers who began Langston Charter Middle School. She continues her involvement in charter schools by serving on the Board of NEXT High School. She also currently serves on the MedEx Advisory Board.
Ms. Stevens received a master’s of city and regional planning degree from Clemson University and a BA in sociology from Furman University.
She has served as a member of the South Carolina Mental Health Commission, South Carolina Education Lottery Commission, Chairman of the Legacy Trust, Greenville County Planning Commission and, most recently, as chairman of the Greenville County Citizens Roads Advisory Commission. Ms. Stevens was the first woman elected as the Greenville County Republican Party Chairman.
She is married to Roger Stevens and they have two children.
Lewis R. Vaughn has been a dedicated and respected public servant in Greenville for almost 25 years. After six years of service in the U.S. Army with assignments in Europe and Korea, Mr. Vaughn attended Draughon’s Business College and began his career in the data processing department of the J.P. Stevens Company in 1958. In 1963, he joined the Monsanto Company and served in several management positions during his 23-year career there.
Mr. Vaughn served in the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1988 to November 2006 where he served on the Military, Medical and Municipal Affairs Committee; Labor, Commerce and Industry Committee; and was a member of the Ways and Means Committee from 1995 to 2006.
He also served in the South Carolina Senate from November 2006 to November 2008 where he served on the Corrections and Penology, Fish Games and Forestry, Judiciary and Rules Committees. Mr. Vaughn was appointed to the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education in July 2010.
William M. Webster IV, from Spartanburg, is past Chair of the Board of Trustees. Mr. Webster is co-founder and Chairman of the Board for Advance America, Cash Advance Centers, Inc., and previously served in the White House.
He earned a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1983 and a Bachelor of Arts in English and German from Washington & Lee University in 1979, where he graduated summa cum laude. He attended Germany’s University of Regensburg on a Fulbright Scholarship.
Mr. Webster served multiple roles in the White House, including as assistant to the president and director of scheduling and advance, where he was responsible for the coordination and planning of all presidential events with management responsibility for a staff of 25 full-time and 300 part-time employees. He also served as chief of staff to U.S. Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley and chief of staff for the presidential transition where he was responsible for coordination and administration of sub-Cabinet appointments in the Clinton Administration. Previously, he was president of Greenville-based Carabo Inc., which at that time operated 27 Bojangles’ Chicken ‘n Biscuit restaurants in S.C.
His community activities include service as chairman of the Board of Trustees for Converse College and on the Washington and Lee University Board of Trustees, the MD Anderson Medical Center Board of Visitors, the Spartanburg Day School Board of Trustees and the Liberty Fellows Board of Directors.
Marguerite R. Wyche is president of Marguerite Wyche and Associates, LLC. She formerly served as president and co-owner of The Furman Company Residential, LLC, and as executive vice president of Coldwell Banker Caine. She has been recognized locally and nationally for outstanding performance in residential real estate.
Ms. Wyche graduated from Vanderbilt University with honors.
She is a former chairman of Greenville Health Corporation of Greenville Health System. Ms. Wyche also has served on boards or held leadership positions with groups such as Greenville Women Giving, United Way of Greenville, Greenville Chamber of Commerce, Greenville Technical College Foundation Board and the Bank of America Advisory Board.
