Helping Individuals with Joint Problems
Has joint pain forced you to give up the activities you love? The NewLife Center for Joint Health at Oconee Memorial Hospital is designed to help our patients return to enjoying the things they love the most. Greenville Health System Providers from Blue Ridge Orthopaedics provide top care to all of our patients.
From walking to bending, joints are involved in nearly every motion we make. For individuals with joint pain, this means that even everyday activities can be adversely impacted. While some people may experience only bothersome symptoms from joint problems, others suffer from debilitating pain. Severe joint pain can impact the ability to work, walk or even move due to arthritis or other causes.
Thanks to developments in surgical techniques and instrumentation, joint replacement is considered to be the best method of handling advanced arthritis in the knee or hip. Joint replacement surgery can help to relieve pain and improve the quality of life for patients with joint pain. The procedure involves replacing damaged cartilage and bone with an artificial surface. Replacement implants are composed of a metal alloy and a polyethylene insert. The implants create a new, smoothly functioning joint that prevents painful bone-on-bone contact.
At Oconee Memorial Hospital, hundreds of total hip and knee replacements are performed every year. Our surgeons perform the latest minimally invasive techniques:
- Anterior approach hip replacement surgery
- Reverse total shoulder replacements
- Visionaire Patient Matched Instrumentation from Smith & Nephew- Visionaire technology offers patient-customized knee replacement for more precise placement that may extend the life of the implant.
Our state-of-the-art technology makes orthopaedic surgery less invasive for less pain and faster recovery.

A Comprehensive Center of Coordinated Care
We know that joint replacement patients are not sick. They’ve simply received a new joint and want to return to an active lifestyle as soon as possible. That’s why we’ve created a joint center dedicated exclusively to patients with joint problems.
NewLife Center for Joint Health at Oconee Memorial Hospital provides patients with a unique hospital experience. Located in a dedicated space within the hospital, patients are cared for by orthopaedic nurses, physical therapist and occupational therapists with specialty training in caring for total joint replacement patients. And throughout the entire care process, our Joint Care Coordinator coordinates every aspect, creating an efficient and seamless experience.
The center’s comprehensive planned course of treatment includes both pre- and post-operative services concentrating on patient involvement, physical therapy sessions and group involvement. The goal of the center is to promote wellness and independence through patient education, a dedicated team of professionals, family involvement and group interaction.
Within the month prior to your joint replacement surgery, you will attend a joint replacement Joint Camp visit (pre-assessment), where you will see the Physician Assistant and Joint Care coordinator who will oversee your care in the hospital. You will have bloodwork and an EKG performed, and attend a pre-operative class and luncheon.
The benefits of attending Joint Camp:
- Tour our facility and the NewLife Center for Joint Health
- Meet and build a relationship with the Joint Care Coordinator
- You and your Care Partner will attend a pre-operative class to become better informed on what you should expect before, during, and after your hospital stay. Former patients report that after attending the pre-operative class they have less anxiety for the upcoming surgery.
- Meet others who will be having a total joint replacement.
- Meet with the Joint Center’s Case Manager to discuss discharge needs.
We are aware of the pivotal role that family members and friends can have in your surgery preparation and recovery. That’s why we encourage you to designate a Care Partner to help you through your experience. Keeping your Care Partner and loved ones educated and informed is one of the center’s key components.
To date, our patients have been very appreciative of the outstanding care received. Our patient satisfaction scores are among the best in the nation, and we are continually looking for ways to improve our program.
Your surgery will be performed by one of our board-certified orthopaedic surgeons. With training in joint replacement, our surgeons bring years of experience and a passion for excellence.
You’ll recover from surgery within our designated Joint Center, a unit dedicated specifically to joint replacement patients. The unit features private patient rooms with private bathrooms, a gym for physical and occupational therapy sessions, and spaces for group and family gatherings.
Post-operative patients receive care from nurses and other medical professionals who are highly skilled in caring for orthopaedic patients. As you are recovering from surgery, our physical and occupational therapists will develop a rehabilitation program to meet your individual needs. Our unique program at Oconee Memorial Hospital’s Newlife Center for Joint Health, part of Greenville Health System (GHS), makes your road to recovery as easy and worry-free as possible. We use a team approach to your care that includes doctors, physician assistants, registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, social workers and case managers.
We not only care for you, but for your Care Partner as well
Your stay at the NewLife Center for Joint Health offers personalized meals for your Care Partner during your stay, as well as, an open refreshment area to ensure that you and your Care Partner are comfortable during your stay.
Discharge plans are discussed before surgery. Following surgery, the care team meets daily to finalize post-operative care plans or to make any necessary changes needed to ensure a continued progressive recovery.
Once you are at home, you’ll still have the support of the NewLife Center for Joint Health team. In addition to follow-up visits with your surgeon and physical therapy sessions, our Joint Care Coordinator will be available to answer questions and provide assistance if needed.
