Savor Summer Safely!

It’s Summertime!

With the beautiful weather upon us, we are sure to see the young and young-at-heart venture outside more often. Now is the time to get outside and enjoy the wonder and beauty of nature. But whether you are taking a walk, working in your garden, or listening to the quiet sounds of sunset in your backyard, make sure you’re doing it safely.

Your own backyard can truly be a fun-filled and exciting place full of wonders. We cannot forget, however, to make sure it’s a safe place as well. When getting your yard summer-ready, remove places where rain can collect and become stagnant. The warm weather combined with a forgotten swimming pool filled with water can become a breeding ground for mosquitoes which are more than just a nuisance. They are carriers for many diseases such as West Nile Virus.

Follow these tips to savor your summer safely …

  • Don’t allow a child under the age of 12 operate any lawn mower or farming equipment
  • Riding mowers should only be ridden by people who are 16 or older
  • Do not allow small children to ride along on riding lawn mowers or farm equipment
  • Before you mow, walk around the yard and pick up stones, toys, sticks and other debris to prevent the mower from kicking up flying objects
  • Make sure children are kept at a safe distance from the area you are mowing or using farm machinery
  • Protect yourself by wearing sturdy shoes—not sandals—while mowing.
  • Wear eye and hearing protection as well
  • Use a mower with a control that stops movement if the handle is released
