Q: How can I improve wrinkles around my mouth?

A community member wrote in to ask about the best way to treat deep wrinkles around her mouth. Licensed medical aeshtetician Melissa Owens, with Prisma Health’s Carolina Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics, has an answer.

A: Many people believe that deep lines form around the mouth as a result of smoking or drinking through a straw. While these activities can certainly contribute to wrinkling, most people will eventually develop these expression lines from daily activities like speaking and eating.

In the upper half of the face, neurotoxins like Botox and Dysport are effective for correcting expression lines, but are not usually recommended around the mouth because we still need to be able to use those muscles for eating and speaking. In these situations, fillers are often the most beneficial treatment option to replace volume loss and redefine the natural lip line that we lose over time.

Rejuvenation treatments like microneedling and laser resurfacing can also help reduce the depth of these lines by rebuilding collagen in the skin and smoothing the surface texture. The best results will be achieved by a combination of both injectables and rejuvenation treatments, paired with a good skin care regimen and sunscreen to maintain results and reduce further damage.
