GHS recognized as healthcare equality leader

GREENVILLE, SC—Greenville Health System has once again been recognized with the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s “Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality” designation.

This is the fourth consecutive year that Greenville Memorial Hospital was named a leader by the foundation.

“At GHS, we want to ensure that all of our patients, families, and visitors are treated with the same high level of dignity and respect. This designation is a testament to the hard work of our employees who are committed to providing a welcoming and compassionate health care experience that is responsive to the needs of LGBT communities,” said Kinneil Coltman, DHA, Prisma Health’ chief diversity officer.

To earn healthcare leader status, facilities must have established LGBT-inclusive patient nondiscrimination policies, as well as employment non-discrimination policies that are fully LGBT inclusive. They also ensure equal visitation rights for LGBT people, patients and families; and their staff members participate in training in LGBT patient-centered care.

In all, five South Carolina hospitals were named leaders in LGBT Healthcare Equality by the foundation.

A record 2,061 healthcare facilities are rated in the HRC Foundation’s 2016 HEI survey, up 37 percent from the last survey.  An unprecedented 496 healthcare centers from all regions of the United States earned the Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality designation this year, with substantial gains in the South.

While every region of the country saw an increase in the number of medical facilities earning HEI leader status this year, the South stepped up with the second highest number of new leaders. It now ranks second only to the Northeast region in the number of hospitals and healthcare facilities committing to LGBT-competent and inclusive care.

GHS also recently established its LGBT Patient Care Collaborative. In recognition of various national studies indicating LGBT patients are at risk of experiencing healthcare disparities, the GHS collaborative consists of physicians and other providers who are committed to decreasing these disparities while improving the health care experience for LGBT patients and their families.

The Human Rights Campaign Foundation is the educational arm of the United States’ largest civil rights organization that’s focused on achieving lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality.
