Clement’s Kindness Fund for the Children, Greenville County Parks, Recreation, & Tourism, and Prisma Health Children’s Hospital honored Dr. Cary E. Stroud as namesake of the Dr. Cary E. Stroud Camper Care Center at Pleasant Ridge Camp & Retreat Center.
Dr. Stroud was instrumental in the founding of the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Center in 1986. The center, now known as the BI-LO® Charities Children’s Cancer Center at Greenville Health System, has tripled in size and offers a complete range of treatments for patients with pediatric cancer or serious blood disorders. Dr. Stroud served as medical director until 2013, when he moved on to start the Supportive Care Team at Prisma Health Children’s Hospital.
“This outstanding medical facility is a fine tribute to a superb physician who spent most of his professional career caring for Upstate children with cancer and blood disorders,” said Bill Schmidt, MD, PhD, medical director of Prisma Health Children’s Hospital and vice president of development for the Prisma Health Health Sciences Center. “The Cary E. Stroud Camper Care Center sounds just right to me. It’s fitting that future campers will know his name and read about his unmatched compassion for children and their families.”
Pleasant Ridge Camp & Retreat Center, home of Camp Courage and Camp Spearhead, is owned and operated by Greenville County Parks, Recreation, & Tourism and provides individuals with medical, physical or intellectual limitations a place to experience camp. The addition of the Dr. Stroud Camper Care Center will allow more individuals with illnesses and disabilities to attend camp.
“The Dr. Cary E. Stroud Camper Care Center is a significant addition to the campus and was purposefully designed so when a camper must be in the center he or she can still see, hear, and feel the camp experience,” said Gene Smith, executive director of Greenville County Parks, Recreation, & Tourism. “This new facility increases our capacity to serve medically fragile campers. We are grateful for the private support of a public asset which will serve so many in Greenville County.”
Clement’s Kindness helped fund the development of the Camper Care Center with a major gift of $431,000 through their partnership with Camp Courage, a special camps program for patients and families of BI-LO® Charities Children’s Cancer Center.
“On behalf of Clement’s Kindness, we are thrilled to honor Dr. Stroud through the Camper Care Center,” said Suzy Haynsworth, advisory board chair of Clement’s Kindness. “Dr. Stroud has dedicated his career to helping families facing life threatening illnesses, and we couldn’t think of a better way to honor him for his commitment to improve care for pediatric cancer patients in our region.”
“I am deeply honored and humbled by seeing my name on this magnificent structure,” said Dr. Stroud. “This Camper Care Center will make it possible for children now unable to attend camp to have a Camp Courage experience. I am extremely grateful to Clement’s Kindness for their steadfast and continuing commitment to make a difference by improving the lives of children and teenagers with cancer and chronic blood diseases.”
