I had been over weight for most of my life. After getting married in my late twenties my weight became a major health issue. At 340 lbs my life had become a dismal rotation of work, eat and sleep. A simple trip to Wal-Mart felt more like a marathon.
After years of failed diets and weight loss programs, I decided to attend the bariatric program information session that a coworker told me about. From that first meeting I knew that in order to improve my health and well-being I had to take the first step.
I met many new friends attending the support group meetings. The doctors and the staff are very supportive and encouraging in every aspect of the process. Even after you reach your goal they encourage you to continue attending support groups and dietary consult to help you stay on track with eating healthy and making the right choices.
After losing 197 lbs. I feel like my life has just began. A walk through the mall is a joy instead of a struggle. Even after losing the first 25 lbs. on the pre surgery diet I felt so much better. Most people think looking good is the most important thing about weight loss. But I have found that feeling good outweighs looking good any day.
Bariatric Solutions has an answer for your weight loss goal if you are willing to take that first step. Attend a meeting you will not regret it!! Remember bariatric surgery is not a quick fix, it a tool you have to put forth the effort.
I had been searching for help for years. I weighed over 590 lbs., and had gone to five other surgeons and their informative sessions trying to get weight loss surgery. Three didn’t take Medicare, and two had no interest whatsoever in someone with a BMI of over 80. I had pretty much given up hope.
Late one night I was searching the internet and came across Bariatric Solutions website. I had contacted several other surgeons websites using the “Contact Us” forms and never heard back from them. In desperation I sent an email to Bariatric Solutions, detailing my weight and insurance, never expecting a reply.
Early the next morning I received an email I signed up for the next informative session that same day.
I came to the session, and after thinking about it, etc., signed up and committed myself to the program. That was July of 2008. It is now July of 2009, I am six months post op, 190 lbs. lighter, and feeling like a different person. I still have a long way to go, but I have lost right at half of what I need to lose. I am perfecting wise eating habits, exercising, walking (thats a miracle in itself) and beginning to enjoy life again.
All that said, one of the most important aspects of my experience with Bariatric Solutions has been the staff. From day one, I have always been treated with respect, dignity, and kindness. I actually leave every appointment or group session in better spirits than when I came. Believe me, that helps, because I drive two hours each way to come to Greenville. You know, even when there have been changes in the staff, it is always seamless and smooth, just like the newer folks have always been there.
However, I also appreciate that the dietitians, as well as Dr. Bour and Dr. Scott, and their assistants, can be tough when it is necessary. They are kind and considerate, but not pushovers. They tell it to you straight. Also, I have always had every question answered, and have never felt rushed, especially with Dr. Bour or Dr. Scott. I have always gotten calls back from anyone on staff, but I understand that most of them will be after 4:00 or 5:00. But they call back. Katie actually returned a call on Christmas Eve. I’ll never forget that. Thank you. I also contact some by email and those are responded to as well.
The group sessions are extremely helpful, both before and after surgery. Honestly, they are indispensable. You will find the most encouraging, sympathetic, and empathetic ears and hearts within the walls of Bariatric Solutions. I have made friends with other patients, and receive encouragement from them and offer as much as I can to others. Through the group sessions, and especially through the dietician classes, I received and continue to receive, a lot of information; and knowledge is power. It is one of the most powerful tools I received to help me with my weight loss journey.
In closing, I just want to say thank you to the entire staff, but especially to Dr. Bour and Dr. Scott.
Personal Testimonial from previous gastric bypass patient:
I had always been heavy my entire life. I suffered from very low self esteem; I looked down on myself and worried about how others viewed me to the point that I was unable to have fun in life. After numerous failed relationships and severe emotional scarring I decided that I was through with this particular way of life.
I felt like there was someone inside of me whom was not the person reflected back to me when I looked in the mirror, that this person was greater and deserved everything the world had to offer her.
After talking to several people I ended up confiding in a friend who was a previous gastric bypass recipient and she praised Dr. Bour and his staff to the point where I had no other choice but to check them out.
The pre-surgery informational sessions that I attended at Bariatric Solutions were not only educational, they provided the best nutritional information by far and it was made to be very understandable.
As I began the program the staff at Bariatric Solutions were very eager to help me and made me very comfortable in knowing that if I had any questions or concerns all that I needed to do was pick up the phone and call them.
After having my surgery several staff members called to check on me which was very thoughtful and they would all celebrate with me and congratulate me when I would come in to weigh or for an appointment or group. This was very encouraging, not a lot of my friends and family supported me when I decided to have the surgery so to know that they were on my side and rooting for me gave me a great boost in my esteem.
Now twenty months after surgery and a new baby boy I fell like my quality of life has greatly approved. I am very thankful for Dr Bour and all of the staff at Bariatric Solutions. I appreciate all the time and effort that they put into each of their positions and the help and encouragement that they provide to each one of their patients. In my book they are the best of the best!
