Obstetric Services

Having a baby?

Choosing an obstetrician is one of the most important decisions you will make as an expectant mother. You need a medical home where you feel welcome, and where you are comfortable asking questions and expressing your concerns. We feel Premier Women’s Care is that place, and we believe you will, too.

Our practice delivers in The Family Birthplace at Greenville Memorial Hospital. This state-of-the-art academic medical facility offers everything from family-centered maternity care to Level III Neonatal Intensive Care for your newborn if necessary.

We are pleased to give our patients the opportunity to take advantage of offerings such as Magic Hour, board certified lactation consultants and an onsite women’s boutique.

We consider pregnancy to be a healthy, normal part of life, not an illness. Unless you are having a pregnancy concern, we recommend continued regular physical activity, including moderate daily exercise and normal sexual activity, throughout your pregnancy.

The recommended increase in calories during your pregnancy is only 300 additional calories per day. This results in an average pregnancy weight gain of 25 to 35 pounds for an individual with a healthy pre-pregnancy weight. We recommend that you avoid under-cooked meats and unpasteurized milk products during your pregnancy. Caffeine intake should be limited to one caffeinated beverage daily. Alcohol should be avoided. Please review the handout regarding fish consumption, included in your OB packet.

Nausea, vomiting, breast tenderness, and fatigue are common in early pregnancy, typically improving after your first trimester. Non-prescription remedies for nausea include: acupressure bands, Unisom, ginger tea capsules, and vitamin B6 supplementation. We also suggest eating multiple small snacks throughout the day, and upon first awakening to minimize nausea. If these remedies are unsuccessful, and you are experiencing persistent vomiting, with the inability to keep down liquids, please contact our office at 864-522-5500.

Your birth plan

The birth of your baby should be one of the most memorable, life-changing and joyful experiences of your life. You will want to spend time thinking through the details of your hopes and desires for this special event.

A birth plan is a simple, clear, one-page statement of your preferences for the birth of your child. Providing a copy of the plan for everyone directly involved in the birth will help them better understand what is happening and give them the opportunity to resolve issues before the big day. The plan will provide an effective avenue for discussing important details with those responsible for supporting and caring for you.

Fill out your birth plan and take it to your physician during your 30 week visit.

NOTE: Try to remain reasonably flexible in your desires, because things don’t always go according to plan. Remember that the important thing is the safe birth of your little bundle of joy.
