Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas offers total joint replacement for knees, hips and shoulders as well as partial replacement and resurfacing for hips and knees. Our procedures are performed at The Joint Center, located within Patewood Memorial Hospital.
Our team consistently works to move orthopaedic care forward through research and education. Brian Burnikel, MD, was one of the first physicians in the country to utilize Birmingham Hip Resurfacing, an alternative to total hip replacement. This is one reason students come from around the world to train with our world-class surgeons through our residency and fellowship programs.
We know that joint replacement patients are not sick. They simply have received a new joint and want to return to an active lifestyle as soon as possible. That is why our goal is to promote wellness and independence through patient education, a dedicated team of professionals, family involvement and group interaction.
Once a patient and his or her doctor determine that joint surgery is the best treatment option, the patient will be enrolled in our Total Joint Program. This program teaches patients about the procedure they are going to have, how to prepare for surgery and what to expect after surgery. It also gives patients an opportunity to meet our staff, see our facility and become comfortable with the surroundings. Patients will complete all necessary paperwork, preoperative screenings and blood work in one day.
The Total Joint Program is the most comprehensive of its kind in the Upstate and is the only one that gives patients all of their preoperative preparation in one day. By the end of the day, patients feel less stress about their surgery and have the tools they will need to make a full recovery and get back to a more active lifestyle.
