Sports Medicine is a branch of medicine that deals with physical fitness and the treatment and prevention of injuries related to sports and exercise.
Our Primary Care Sports Medicine Physicians prescribe treatments for professional and amateur athletes. They work in our hospitals and clinics, and with local high school, collegiate or professional sports athletes.
Our Physicians often work alongside physical therapists to create rehabilitation plans, or with athletic trainers to develop appropriate exercise regimens. While orthopedic surgeons are trained to perform surgery, primary care sports medicine doctors do not operate on athletes but can expedite referral to one of our talented surgeons if surgery is required.
Common sports injuries that can occur at any age:
- Impact during contact sports
- Poor training practices
- Improper use of gear
- Exercising without proper stretching and warm-ups
If you believe you may have a sports related injury, contact one of our physicians for an appointment:
Each year injuries in high school athletics take a significant toll on athletes and their families and create significant health care costs. GHS hopes to reduce the number of injuries and associated health care costs. The physicians, athletic trainers, physical therapists, and strength coaches at Steadman Hawkins, Blue Ridge Orthopaedics, Proaxis Therapy, and Acceleration Sports Institute encourage proper warm ups and preparation prior to participation in sporting events. These four components could prevent serious injury during sporting activities: dynamic warm up, functional, balance, and agility.
