Our Primary Care Sports Medicine physicians at GHS take a special focus on treating sports injuries caused by a variety of factors. Not all sports injuries require surgery, and many conditions can be treated with simple treatment plans, medicine, and physical therapy.

Joint Replacement Program

Greenville Health System’s Patewood Memorial Hospital has been awarded The Gold Seal of Approval by The Joint Commission for its total joint replacement program, involving knee, hip and shoulder replacements. It is the first hospital in South Carolina to receive the commission’s Gold Seal for its shoulder replacement program and the only hospital to have all three designations; knee, hip and shoulder.

Dr. Richard Hawkins Presents at ICSES in Korea

The 13th International Congress of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Conference was held in Jeju, South Korea on May 18-20th, 2016. Dr. Richard Hawkins was ICL Moderator and presenter of “Decision Making in Massive Rotator Cuff Tears” and also The Neer Lecture – “The Journey Through Life and Orthopaedics”. This lecture is quite an honor and is named for Dr. Charles Neer, founding member and first President of the American Shoulder and Elbow Society, and Dr. Hawkins was his first shoulder fellow at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City in 1975. Many of the Korean orthopaedic physicians have trained with Dr. Hawkins over the years through a Traveling Fellowship, as well as orthopaedic physicians from Japan.

Patewood Memorial Ranked #19

Greenville Health System’s Patewood Memorial Hospital has been recognized as one of the best hospitals for 2016-17 in orthopedics by U.S. News & World Report. The hospital is ranked #19 in the nation in orthopedics and is the only hospital in the state to be ranked in this specialty.

Patewood Memorial Hospital was also named high performing in hip replacement, and GHS’ flagship hospital, Greenville Memorial, was named high performing in heart failure, colon cancer surgery and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
