Letter from the Directors
The Stroke program is a shining example of how GHS is committed to the vision of “transforming health care for the benefit of the people and communities we serve”. This program has grown by leaps and bounds since its inception in 2007 and now with the endovascular capabilities available, we are truly transforming stroke care for the communities of not only Greenville, but also the entire upstate of South Carolina. The new endovascular stroke guidelines have provided a unique opportunity for multiple groups such as EMS, mobile care companies as well as large health systems in the upstate across many counties to collaborate. We have all started to communicate and work together to provide timely care and transport of stroke patients so that they can have the best outcome, because Time is Brain.
In this new found collaboration, GHS is leading the way by providing comprehensive stroke care and services. Our stroke program at Greenville Memorial hospital has been certified as primary stroke center by the Joint commission since 2009. Further, we have been recognized by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association as Gold Plus and Target Stroke Honor Roll award recipients for excellence in stroke care. Target Stroke Elite Plus recognition for Greenville Memorial and Greer Memorial Hospitals means that these hospitals consistently gave the only FDA approved medication to treat acute ischemic stroke in less than 45 minutes from patient arrival to the emergency department more than 50% of the time it is needed.
These accomplishments are made possible by our stroke team which includes neurologists with stroke experience, vascular neurologists, vascular neurosurgeons, neurointerventionalists, neurointensivists, nurse practitioners with added experience in stroke, neuroradiologists and rehabilitation physicians. Patients are cared for in a dedicated intensive care unit as well as medical floors which are staffed by highly trained nurses, rehabilitation therapists, and other technicians who collaborate between departments to provide the best possible care for stroke survivors and their families.
Our stroke clinic, staffed by vascular neurologists and nurse practitioners, cares for stroke survivors after hospitalization as well as new patients referred by other specialties. In addition, patients have the opportunity to participate in clinical registries and randomized clinical trials.
However, GHS is not just solely working on improving ischemic stroke care. The care of aneurysms and subarachnoid hemorrhage has also greatly changed and advanced in the last decade. The endovascular services at GHS allow for the most advanced treatment in aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations available today encompassing open neurosurgery, endovascular coiling and flow diversion as well as stereotactic radiosurgery. We are committed to improving all stroke care and are willing to put the resources behind this care for the communities we now serve. This has been demonstrated recently with the opening of both the new dedicated Neuro ICU and the new bi-plane radiology suit in January 2016.
We are proud to be a part of the stroke care collaboration in the upstate and we invite you to check out our website and see all the great things that are happening at GHS.
