Hospitalists are internal medicine physicians who have chosen to focus their care on patients in the hospital. There are many advantages of hospitalists. They have more expertise in caring for complicated needs of hospitalized patients on a daily basis. They are more readily available to meet with family members, follow up on tests and coordinate with nursing. A hospitalist may see a patient more than once a day to insure that care is going according to plan and to explain test findings to patients and family members.
Hospitalists also coordinate the care of patients in the hospital and facilitate communication between different doctors caring for a patient. They serve as the point of contact for other doctors and nurses for questions, updates, and delineating a comprehensive plan of care. Similarly, because hospitalists are in the hospital most of the time, they are able to track test results and order necessary follow-up tests promptly. This is in contrast to the traditional approach in which the primary doctor may come to the hospital the next day to follow up on the results and take the next necessary step at that time.
Greenville Health System (GHS) has one of the largest networks of hospitalists in South Carolina, and these physicians provide care at all GHS facilities: Greenville Memorial Hospital,Greer Memorial Hospital, Hillcrest Memorial Hospital, North Greenville Hospital, Patewood Memorial Hospital, Laurens County Memorial Hospital and Oconee Memorial Hospital. GHS hospitalists also provide care at Baptist Easley Hospital. For Baptist Easley, call (864) 442-8278 or (864) 442-7339.

Oconee Memorial Hospital
Many patients at Oconee Memorial Hospital are cared for by our team of hospitalists. Our hospitalist program is one of the ways we ensure patients receive the highest caliber of care during their hospital stay.
Hospitalists are physicians who specialize in the care of patients while they are in the hospital. Our hospitalist services feature a team of full-time internal medicine and family medicine physicians who dedicate 100 percent of their time to the hospital focusing their attention on hospitalized patients. Due to their knowledge and familiarity with the hospital, our hospitalists are skilled in utilizing hospital resources very effectively and efficiently.
Oconee Memorial Hospital hospitalists work closely with the patient’s primary care physician to make sure patients receive the best possible care during their hospital stay. Patients who do not have a family physician are assigned to the hospitalist program upon admission to the hospital. This way Oconee County Memorial Hospital ensures that every patient receives optimal health care.
Our hospitalists provide around-the-clock care and are board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and American Academy of Family Physicians. They order tests, prescribe medications, monitor patients’ progress and ensure patients receive the highest level of care while in the hospital. They even help patients after their hospital discharge by arranging follow-up care with primary and specialty care physicians, referring them to appropriate programs and ensuring they have the prescription medications they need.
