Treating digestive diseases

Gastroenterology is a branch of medicine concerned with digestive conditions. The practice of gastroenterology concentrates on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases involving the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine (colon), liver, gallbladder and pancreas.

The gastrointestinal organs are responsible for the movement of material through the stomach and intestine, the digestion and absorption of nutrients into the body, removal of waste from the system, and the function of the liver as a digestive organ. When one of these areas is not functioning properly, a gastroenterologist may be able to help.

Conditions treated

Our experienced team of gastroenterologists can provide treatment for a variety of gastrointestinal conditions including the following:

  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
  • Hepatitis C
  • Cirrhosis
  • Swallowing disorders
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
  • Barrett’s esophagus
  • Diseases of the pancreas

Prisma Health–Upstate interventional gastroenterologist Veeral M. Oza, MD, implements a Therapeutic Interventional Endoscopy program, which includes medical, surgical, oncologic and radiologic approaches. Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) is a powerful tool that, used in conjunction with CT/MRI to closely evaluate and assess pancreatic cysts and other diseases of the pancreas, can aid in early detection.

Prisma Health has two gastroenterology groups and a colon and rectal surgery practice, should surgery be necessary.
