HeartLife is a multi-phase, comprehensive heart disease rehabilitation program offered by the Heart & Vascular Institute of Greenville Health System. The first of its kind in South Carolina, the program maintains national certification and is considered one of the top cardiac rehabilitation and prevention programs in the country. Referral into this life-enhancing program can be made before discharge from the hospital as well as from a doctor’s office.
Treating and slowing the progression of heart disease are central to the HeartLife program. We present step-by-step information to teach people how to improve their quality of life while living with heart disease. We believe in helping people take charge of their health with progressive, positive classes on diet, exercise, stress reduction and emotional well-being.
Well-trained, caring staff members ensure HeartLife patients have the knowledge and tools to get and stay well. Patients receive invaluable emotional as well as physical benefits from the program. Support and understanding also come from other patients.
The most recent HeartLife outcomes show that 96 percent of our participants feel they are better able to manage their health after rehab, and they rate their HeartLife experience as Very Good or Excellent.
The outcomes also demonstrate a 94 percent medication adherence rate and a smoking cessation rate that is more than twice that of the national average. A highly successful and free smoking cessation support group is offered to our patients and the community.
Our multidisciplinary staff closely monitors the large number of patients with diabetes. It is not uncommon to see these patients require lower dosages and/or fewer diabetes medications as a result of the program.
The key to your success is our professional team of specially trained cardiac nurses, exercise physiologists, registered dietitians, and vocational and stress counselors. Working together with you and your doctor, we will design a program to meet your specific health and fitness goals.
Recovering from heart disease often is challenging and requires a long-term commitment to change. Since 1979, the HeartLife Program has helped thousands of cardiac patients return to a full and active life.
Designed for You
Once you are sent home from the hospital and as your doctor orders, you may begin our medically monitored outpatient program. The HeartLife staff offers workouts using a wide variety of exercise equipment.
Throughout the program, we are constantly evaluating your progress—monitoring your heart and blood pressure, evaluating your diet, studying your lab work, helping to increase your strength and flexibility, and adjusting your exercise regimen according to your progress.
At HeartLife, you get stronger and better through taking part in personalized prescriptions for exercise, heart-healthy diets, stress reduction and other healthy practices. With confidence and enjoyment, you share your experience and commitment to making healthy lifestyle changes with family, friends and fellow patients.
Our program is recommended for patients with the following conditions:
- Stable angina
- Heart surgery
- Post-heart attack
- Balloon angioplasty/stent
- Valve surgery
- Congestive heart failure
Based on your diagnosis, Medicare and most insurance plans cover at least some portion of HeartLife. Our professional staff will obtain your doctor’s consent, and our business office counselors can help you understand your insurance coverage.
