Education and Research


The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine hosts a medical school clerkship and electives for third and fourth year medical students of the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville and selected visiting students. This clerkship integrates one-on-one attending supervision in inpatient, outpatient, emergency and consultation services. Students also have the opportunity to rotate at Harris Psychiatric Hospital, the state sponsored hospital for the Upstate, as well as the child and adolescent programs.

Residency Program

The Prisma Health–Upstate and the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville Psychiatry Residency Program is a four-year training program that accepts five residents per year. The Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Residency Review Committee (RRC) granted full accreditation in 2015. Click here for more information.

Grand Rounds

Marshall I. Pickens Hospital, in conjunction with Prisma Health–Upstate, is a leader in continuing education. Marshall I. Pickens Hospital hosts grand rounds weekly from September to May with CME/CEU offered at each event. Grand rounds occur on Tuesdays at noon and are available through Skype within the Prisma Health–Upstate system. Each session offers one hour of CME credit and is free and open to the public.
