Language Access

The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that one in six Americans speaks a language other than English at home. While most can speak some English when needed, experts estimate that as many as 20 million people, or about 1 in every 15 people in the U.S., speaks and understands little English.

To provide the best care, health care providers must be able to communicate effectively across languages and cultures. GHS’ Language Services Department works to eliminate language access as a barrier to high quality health care. The mission of the department is to bridge communication and cultures compassionately and innovatively for the patients, families and communities we serve. We have one of the largest departments of this kind in the country and offer interpretation services free of charge.

The GHS Language Services Department has more than 50 qualified medical interpreters who provide services in person, over the phone or by video. Interpreters serve GHS hospitals, outpatient facilities and physician practices.

In addition to Spanish, here are some of the most commonly requested languages:

  • American Sign Language
  • Arabic
  • Chinese
  • Korean
  • Russian
  • Vietnamese

Available around the clock, the Language Services Department provides access to more than 200 languages over the phone and many in person.

In addition to offering an impressive array of interpreting services, GHS is one of the few health systems in the nation that features a team of in-house translators who translate a wide variety of GHS documents.

Services for the Deaf

GHS provides interpreting services for deaf and hard-of-hearing patients using both in-person and video-remote interpreters. Our video interpreting service provides the patient with a view of the interpreter through a computer screen.
