Women’s Cancer

I’m Carolyn…mother…grandmother…and this is my story. Ever gotten news that just…stopped you? Pancreatic cancer once stopped me in my tracks, but with help from my family, friends and health team, I beat it and got a move on again.

The “C” word. Not me! I’m too young! I’ve got plans. The thought of going through surgery, handling the insurance, the chemo…so many parts and so many pieces…it worried me. What do I do first? Who needs to be called next?

But at the Cancer Center of Greenville Hospital System (GHS), everything works together. They call it the Oncology Multidisciplinary Center. It’s a fancy name for a simple idea: every part of my medical treatment was coordinated. And I mean every part. Everyone knew my treatment plan and everyone worked as a team. I call it the Carolyn team. The only thing I had to worry about was allowing my body to heal and strengthen.

Annette, my Nurse Navigator, was an angel. All throughout, she made sure that every part of my treatment plan was going smoothly. But, more than that, she was there for me, every minute of every day. We laughed together. And we cried together. She told me I didn’t have to act so strong. It was okay to cry. I needed that.

You know, to have such a gifted medical team at the Cancer Center who cares so much is so comforting. The doctors and staff at the Cancer Center were beautiful…just beautiful! The cancer’s gone I’m blessed and back to my old self; singing…laughing…and loving on people--my favorite thing in the whole wide world to do.
