Vascular Health Alliance Research

The Vascular Health Alliance of Greenville Hospital System (GHS), is currently seeking patients to participate in a variety of clinical trials. GHS Institutional Review Committee (IRC) monitors the administration of each study at the hospital system and approves new trials before patients are enrolled.

Adults with Diabetes

This trial concerns a therapeutic topical ointment for foot ulcers related to diabetes. You may be qualified if you are at least 18 years of age, are ambulatory, have had a foot ulcer for at least two weeks, and are willing to wear a special off-loading boot during waking hours for the 13-week study. Participants may receive $195 for completing the study along with the boot, ulcer ointment, dressing supplies, and a tote bag.

For more information or eligibility requirements, please call Kathy, 864-455-9826, or Pam, 864-455-9825.

Adults with Peripheral Arterial Disease

This trial is a double-blinded, placebo-controlled study comparing clopidogrel and aspirin versus placebo and aspirin in patients with peripheral arterial disease who have undergone a successful angioplasty procedure. Patients must be at least 40 years old.

For more information or eligibility requirements, please call Kathy, 864-455-9826, or Pam, 864-455-9825.

Adults with Renal Artery Stenosis

This trial concerns a new endovascular stent for patients with renal artery stenosis (buildup of plaque in the arteries supplying blood to the kidneys) who have high blood pressure and are on medication to treat it. You may be qualified if you have hypertension and have been told that you have renal artery stenosis. Participants will be expected to follow up at regular intervals.

For more information or eligibility requirements, please call Kathy, 864-455-9826.

Adults with Peripheral Arterial Disease and Intermittent Claudication

This trial concerns the use of immune modulation therapy (IMT) for patients with peripheral arterial disease and intermittent claudication (severe pain in the calf muscles that occurs during walking but not while resting). You may be qualified if you have history of intermittent claudication, have been diagnosed with peripheral arterial disease, and show claudication during a treadmill test. Participants will be expected to be available for this 46-week, outpatient program involving injections of treated samples of their own blood.

For more information or eligibility requirements, please call Patti, 864-455-9833.

People with Stroke

This study is open to patients from 18 to 60 who (1) have had a stroke and (2) have a type of heart defect called a patent foramen ovale, or PFO. This study aims to determine if a new device used to close the PFO will lower future stroke risk more than blood thinners alone.

For more information or eligibility requirements, please call Shannon or Laureen, 864-286-8222.

People with Carotid Stenosis

This trial concerns an endovascular stent for patients with internal carotid artery stenosis (buildup of plaque in the arteries supplying blood to the brain) who are at high risk for needing a carotid endarterectomy (surgical removal of plaque). You may be qualified if you are at least 18 years of age and have greater than or equal to 50 percent carotid stenosis (with symptoms) or greater than or equal to 70 percent carotid stenosis (without symptoms). Pre- and Post-procedure neurological exams will be performed, and participants will be expected to follow up at regular intervals.

For more information or eligibility requirements, call Patti, 864-455-9833.

People with Iliac Artery Stenosis

This trial concerns a new endovascular stent for patients with iliac artery stenosis (buildup of plaque in the arteries branching from the abdominal aorta and extending into the groin). You may be qualified if you have been diagnosed with peripheral vascular disease related to plaque buildup, you undergo an angioplasty procedure to open the iliac artery stenosis and the angioplasty is found to be insufficient by your surgeon, and you are able to take blood-thinning medications. Participants will be expected to follow up at regular intervals.
