Pink and Passionate

Greenville Hospital System University Medical Center dedicates October as Pink and Passionate month.

Did you know that a woman’s chance of getting breast cancer some time in her life is roughly 1 in 8, and the majority of women who get breast cancer have no identifiable risk factors other than being female?

Fortunately for all women, breast cancer is very treatable if detected early.

Knowing your risk factors is important to preventing breast cancer and other diseases. Certain risk factors, such as age, race or genetic makeup cannot be changed, but there are some things you can do to lower your risk of getting breast cancer:

  • Know your family history
  • Maintain a balanced diet and exercise frequently
  • Perform monthly breast self-exams
  • Get a yearly clinical breast exam by a primary care physician
  • Get a yearly mammogram if you are age 40 or older
