Curriculum Overview and Course Descriptions

Each 4 week Elective and Acting Internship in Obstetrics & Gynecology is designed to be a focused educational experience that fulfills the specialty specific learning objectives recommended by the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics. Elective rotations emphasize ambulatory care whereas Acting Internships emphasize inpatient care with a focus on continuing patient care with graduated responsibility commensurate with that of a PGY-1 resident.

The best environment for student learning is one in which expectations are clear, both student and teacher have defined responsibilities, and consequences of behavior are consistent and reliable. Creating an optimal learning environment requires an equal commitment from the teachers (faculty, residents) and learners (students). Towards this end, the 4th year curriculum draws upon three sources of learning:

  1. Direct Patient Care
  2. Self-Directed Study
  3. EBM Journal Article Review

Learning obtained through direct patient care is divided between Hospital-based or ambulatory clinical venues, dependent on the focus of the elective or acting internship. Each course involves participation in direct patient care under the supervision of resident staff and faculty.

Second only to experience, self-directed learning is a critical component of any physician's initial and ongoing education. Therefore, it is essential that students develop a consistent approach to self-directed learning during their elective.

In the context of contemporary graduate medical education and the ACGME Core Competencies, journal article review is a key component of teaching and assessing practice-based learning and improvement. The Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) Journal Article Review is designed to equip students with fundamental skills to keep up with current literature, to impact clinical practice, and to teach critical reading skills. Each student will use the tools provided in the EBM curriculum and consult with a departmental faculty mentor to develop and present one article from a recent scientific journal.
