Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ)

Covering medicine to musicology, this is one of the most complete and current lists of open access (free) journals and is maintained by Lund University in Sweden.

PubMed Central

Peer-reviewed life science journal articles may be found here. Maintained by the National Library of Medicine and National Center for Biotechnology Information, this site is full-text, but not all titles are immediately current and require a 6-month to two-year period before being entered.

BioMed Central

As an independent publishing house, BioMed Central publishes more than 100 peer-reviewed, open access journals. Authors keep the copyright and pay a $500 publication fee once the article is accepted.

Public Library of Science (PLoS)

This open access journal publisher released its first title, PloS Biology, in October, 2003 with more to come. Authors pay $1,500 to publish once the article is accepted.

Full-text articles are available for free in this linked list of medical journals. Articles are free after a determined restriction period, usually six months to two years.

HighWire Press

This site hosts the journals for a number of commercial and society publishers. Current issues of 100-plus subscription-based journals are included and over 300 medical, science, and technology journals overall.

The Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition supports open access publishing and related activities including independent publishers who want to start open access journals.
