Welcome to Girls on the Run of Greenville Hospital System Children's Hospital - a life-changing, non-profit prevention program for girls in the 3rd through 8th grade.
Girls on the Run (ages 8-11) and Girls on Track (ages 12-15) are after school programs that use the power of running to help prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. Through interactive activities such as running, playing games, and discussing important issues, participants learn how to celebrate being girls. It’s a lot more than a running program!
During the 12 week program, girls are empowered with a greater self-awareness, a sense of achievement and a foundation in team building to help them become strong, contented and self-confident young women. Currently, there are over 150 Girls on the Run sites in the country.
Each session is led by trained female coaches that guide and mentor girls through a fun and uplifting curriculum. Coaches teach specific life lessons such as dealing with body image and the media, resisting peer-pressure, making healthy decisions, and contributing to the community. Along the way, the girls train together to walk or run in a 5K (3.1 mile) event.
The Girls on the Run curriculum has been in use since fall 1996. Thousands of girls have participated in the program-and have had so much fun and felt so connected they wanted something of their own that would carry them through middle school: hence the birth of girls on Track.
While the principal philosophies and psychological research behind the two programs are the same, the level of discussion varies. With middle school participants, we delve into more targeted and age-appropriate discussion regarding certain topics (eating disorders, tobacco and alcohol use, personal/internet safety and harassment, to name a few). With the younger girls, the conversation on these topics is more general or may not occur at all.
Our programs instills self-esteem and strong values through health education, life skills development, mentoring relationships, and physical training - all of which are accomplished through an active collaboration with girls and their parents, schools, volunteers, staff, and the community.
