I’m Sharon and this is my story. Watching my family fight one health crisis after another has been scary, but I’m not leaving my destiny to my genes.

There is no escaping the power of our genes. Many serious diseases are genetic, but just because you have a genetic predisposition does not mean that you can’t reduce your risks.

After seeing my family deal with serious health issues, I decided to equip myself with the information I needed to stay healthy. Genetics plays a big role in our susceptibility to developing certain diseases, but staying active, eating healthy and getting regular medical care is vital to maintaining a healthy lifestyle and counteracting the controllable risk factors of diseases.

Since I was already knowledgeable of my family history, I was equipped with the most vital information. I knew I was at high risk, so I proactively started doing everything I could to protect myself by eliminating as many risk factors as possible.

I decided to make healthy changes in my life to give myself the best chance of preventing disease. I joined Greenville Health System Life Center ® Health & Conditioning Club. The Life Center offers medically-based programs and classes designed to help people with specific health concerns. The  Life Center's certified personal trainers continue to help me meet my fitness goals and keep me motivated.

By seeing my family’s struggle with illness, I knew that I wanted to do all that I could to end the cycle. By being educated about my family history, staying active, eating right, and having routine health screenings I know that I am doing my part. By living an active and healthy lifestyle, I’ve taken control over my health.
