Our Curiosity Statement

Diversity. Equity. Inclusion.
These words describe our culture but curiosity describes our team members. When clinicians are able to approach each patient with curiosity, they obtain the best outcomes. When our team members approach one another with curiosity, we obtain the best team. We encourage all of our team members to be whoever it is that they are supposed to be and to teach someone else a little bit about themselves. This fuels our culture, our care, and our commitment to the communities that we serve.

Embrace curiosity

Prisma Health–Upstate’s goal is to establish itself as a leader in optimizing the health care environment and experience through incorporating principles and practices of inclusion. Our organization is a place where individuals are encouraged to step outside their comfort zone with healthy curiosity.

A Multicultural Advisory Council has been established to help ensure the voices of the community and our team members are heard. The committee provides input and guidance in shaping health care services and engages stakeholders in planning, designing and assigning diversity, equity and inclusion efforts, both internally and externally.

Model of diversity

In 2018 Prisma Health–Upstate was honored during the S.C. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce ¡Impacto! Excellence in Business Awards ceremony. The system was lauded for its support of the chamber’s mission over the last decade.

Diversity is more than a program—it is an integral part of who we are. Curiosity toward diversity takes on a strategic significance as we recognize the increasing diversity of the workforce and the patients we serve. We strive to ensure all patients, team members and visitors are treated with respect and feel welcomed within our system.

At Prisma Health–Upstate, the curiosity towards diversity does not stop at the physical, cultural, or religious but purposefully includes the dimensions that are at times harder to appreciate. We believe that the power of a diverse and healthy mental health community is as important as any of the other diversity dimensions that we celebrate.

By embracing diversity and practicing inclusion, we …

  • Enhance patient outcomes through more effective health care delivery design
  • Are better prepared to care for an increasingly diverse patient population
  • Increase our ability to attract and retain the best team members and remain competitive in an increasingly competitive market
  • Celebrate higher team member retention rates and morale
  • Improve organizational decision-making through diversity of perspectives

In collaboration with leadership throughout Prisma Health, the Diversity & Inclusion Department is implementing a strategic plan that focuses on patient care, employee satisfaction, strong academics and community involvement.

Our promise: Inspire health. Serve with compassion. Be the difference.

With the following actions we demonstrate our promise.
  • Collaborate with regional diversity training institutions such as the Riley Institute at Furman University
  • Provide cultural competence training for health care providers
  • Collaboration between clinical staff and leadership to decrease health disparities for underserved populations
  • Enhance Language Services to provide interpreters by video and phone to avoid language barriers to care
  • Focus on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) patient-centered care
We will employ an exceptionally trained and engaged health care workforce that reflects and understands our diverse patients and communities.
  • Prepare our future workforce through Medical Experience Academy, a unique program developed to create health care career interest among young people
  • Invest in the communities we serve through Pipeline Partners and Supporters
  • Team member training on diversity related issues
  • Team member affinity groups (Young Professionals, LGBT Alliance, Hispanic Medical Society, African American Network, Veteran’s Group, Women in Medicine and Science, and the Levi S. Kirkland Society)
  • A workplace flexibility initiative for all team members
  • Diversity recruitment efforts focused on management and leadership positions
We will be intimately connected to the diverse communities we serve through relationships, programs, and services that are aligned with the unique needs of these communities.
We will innovatively teach an exceptionally trained and engaged workforce that reflects and understands our diverse patients and communities.
