We’re Flo and Jennifer and this is our story. Diabetes has taken a toll on our parents. We’re arming ourselves with information and taking charge of our health so that history doesn’t repeat itself.
We’ve both seen first hand the difficulties that people with diabetes face on a daily basis. We have had to watch and care for our parents as their diabetes progressed. That is why we have both decided to be proactive in our fight against diabetes.
We have actively participated in many of the Every Woman programs offered to the community by Greenville Health System and have learned about being healthy and preventing diabetes.
Because of our family history, we know that we are at high risk for developing diabetes, and want to do everything we can to reduce our risk. We discussed our risk factors with a physician and continue to monitor our health carefully. We established a medical home with the physicians at New Horizons before we developed any health issues.
We have both been part of Every Woman and Activate Upstate which has provided us with insight into the disease and how to prevent it. We’ve learned how to shop for, prepare and eat healthy foods. We have also realized the importance of exercise through joining Activate Upstate, which has kept us moving.
Diabetes is a horrible disease that affects so many of us in the Upstate. But through programs like Every Woman and Activate Upstate, we are equipped to reduce our chances of having diabetes. If it weren’t for these programs, then our story might be different.
