The Cottages at Brushy Creek: A Home Away from Home

The Cottages at Brushy Creek offer residents a state-of-the-art cottage-concept senior care center.

The design is residential in nature, providing a comfortable and inviting home for patients in need of skilled nursing care.

The facility’s 144 beds will be divided among 12 houses, each of which will function independently. Each house will have:

  • A kitchen
  • Dining room
  • Living room
  • Den
  • Laundry room
  • Beauty parlor.

The Cottages have the feel of a neighborhood, with a community center anchoring the development.

Resident-Directed Care

Care is resident-directed, which means residents will be in charge of when and what they eat, when they go to bed at night and get up in the morning, and whether pets will be among their housemates. In short, residents will feel as though the cottage is their home.

The Companion Model

The philosophy of care at the Cottages at Brushy Creek is termed the “companion model,” and is based on the idea that most of us have companions at home but that companionship is often lost when the transition is made to a nursing home.

The companion model seeks to provide residents with the comfort and security of having someone dedicated to assisting them with bathing and dressing, as well as do their cooking, cleaning and laundry, and plan activities to keep their minds and bodies active.

The Greer Medical Campus

The Cottages at Brushy Creek will be one component of the larger Greer Medical Campus, which encompasses more than 130 acres straddling Old Buncombe Road. Construction on a recently approved 68-bed acute-care hospital is expected to be complete by spring/summer of 2008. The campus will eventually include a fitness center and additional medical office space.
