Philosophy
The acquisition of new information, the development of technical expertise, the improved delivery of quality healthcare, and the appropriate use of finite resources are all part of our life-long commitment to excellence in orthopaedic surgery. The residency program in orthopaedic surgery at Greenville Hospital System is designed to promote and facilitate the achievement of these goals.
Program Overview
The Greenville Hospital System/University of South Carolina School of Medicine Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Training Program offers a fully accreditated five-year training program. The program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. The PGY1 year is a broad-based rotating clinical experience with three rotations in orthopaedic surgery. The remaining periods are assigned to medicine, neurosurgery, pediatric surgery, plastic surgery, trauma/vascular surgery, rehabilitative medicine, radiology, and emergency medicine. Beginning in the second year and continuing through the fifth year, the resident participates in the evaluation and care of orthopaedic patients in the Level I trauma center, the outpatient surgical facility, the ambulatory clinics, the inpatient orthopaedic floor, the operating rooms, the rehabilitation unit, and the private offices of the faculty. Increasing levels of responsibility and independence are allowed as the resident progresses through the program.
Objectives
1. Prepare residents to meet the challenges of life-long learning in the specialty of orthopaedic surgery.
2. Prepare residents to provide compassionate effective economical care of orthopaedic conditions.
3. Prepare residents for the pursuit of a career in either general orthopaedics or sub-specialty practice following a fellowship experience.
Admission Criteria
Applicants must participate in the National Residency Matching Program. Applications for the PGY-1 positions are accepted only via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). All applicants must be U.S. citizens or have a permanent visa to be considered. Applications are accepted through ERAS beginning August 15 and ending October 25 of each year. A personal interview is required. Unless there are extenuating circumstances, the minimum score on Step I of USMLE for our succesful applicants is 210.

Affiliations
The Greenville Hospital System maintains affiliations with the Medical University of South Carolina and the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. The Greenville Hospital System serves as a satellite clinical campus for the University of South Carolina School of Medicine.
The Orthopaedic Residency Program also maintains an affiliation agreement with the Shriners Hospitals for Children, Greenville Hospital. Many medical students from a variety of medical schools rotate through our hospital for selective rotations.
