ACCREDITATION
The Greenville Health System (GHS) program in Clinical Pastoral Education is accredited for Level One and Level Two CPE with the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education. The ACPE is nationally recognized as an accrediting agency in the field of clinical pastoral education by the U. S. Secretary of Education through the U.S. Department of Education

Greenville Health System
GHS is a 1100 bed healthcare system that includes a large 614-bed tertiary-care hospital with Level One Trauma Center and three smaller hospitals in surrounding communities. The main facility is a teaching hospital with seven residency programs and a medical library. Chaplains serve as members of the interdisciplinary team and are a vital part of patient care at GHS.
Modern Healthcare magazine named GHS one of the top 100 integrated healthcare networks in the nation in 2001. Also, Greenville Memorial Hospital has received the American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines SM–Stroke (GWTG–Stroke) Silver Performance Achievement Award. The award recognizes Greenville Memorial’s commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of stroke care by ensuring that stroke patients receive treatment according to nationally accepted standards and recommendations.
CPE PROGRAMS AT GHS
Residency
The residency program provides a full year (August to August) of intensive, post-graduate clinical pastoral education. Our system offers a wide variety of areas in which residents may participate during their training. They include:
• Greenville Memorial Hospital (614-bed tertiary care center)
• Level One Trauma Center
• Heart Institute
• Children’s Hospital
• Cancer Center
• Behavioral Health Services
• Roger C. Peace Rehabilitation Hospital
Prerequisites for residency include one prior unit of CPE. Tuition is $350.00 per unit. The program runs offers a stipend competitive with that of other centers in the Southeast.
Summer Intensive
This intensive 11-week training program requires students to spend 40 or more hours each week in the hospital, in addition to in-house on-call. Dates are from early June through mid August each year. Tuition is $350.00 per unit.
Extended Unit
All units consist of a minimum of 100 hours of supervised learning and a minimum of 300 hours of clinical practice, in addition to in-house on-call. Each week the intern will be expected to complete the following:
• 5.5 hours of group learning
• 20 hours of clinical work in assigned areas
• 1 hour of individual supervision
Tuition is $350.00 per unit. This program takes place between September and December.
All residents and interns participate in these educational components:
• Individual and group supervision
• Covenant Group
• Didactic seminars
• Workshops
All students function as intern or resident chaplains at GHS, providing pastoral care and counseling to patients, families, and staff.
STAFF
The department director, Rev. Dr. John B. Hartman, II, is also a CPE Supervisor and member of the CPE Center faculty. John Hartman came to GHS in January 2008 from Saint Francis Hospital in Columbus, Georgia. John has 13 years experience as CPE Supervisor. Wendi Steinberg is a CPE supervisor and the Manager of Clinical Pastoral Education who joined GHS in November 2011. Wendi has supervised at the Department of Veteran Affairs in Hampton, VA, Catholic Health Systems in Long Island New York, and Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. Wendi began supervising students in 2003.
