In the early 1990’s a pilot program was established for four University of South Carolina School of Medicine Columbia (USCSM C) ) students to complete their third and fourth years of medical education at the Greenville Health System (GHS). Since that time, the number of medical students completing their clinical training in Greenville has grown; at present some 60-65 USCSM C medical students are at GHS. In July 2013 the last group of USCSM C students will begin their clinical training at GHS. With the opening of the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville (USCSM G) in July 2012, medical students from the Greenville campus will train at GHS, replacing students from USCSM C. The Charter class of 53 students from the USCSM G will be joined by an additional 50-55 students in the Class of 2017; class size will then increase to 75 and then cap one year later at 100. See

GHS has a long tradition of graduate medical education. There are presently over 180 residents and fellows in its residency and fellowship training programs. Many medical students who have completed their medical school education in Greenville have elected to continue their training in a GHS residency; ultimately practicing in the Upstate. The University of South Carolina is one of only a small number of universities in the country with more than one medical school and is committed to enhancing both quality and access to health care for all the citizens of South Carolina.
