The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that one in six Americans speaks a language other than English at home. While most can speak some English when needed, experts estimate that as many as 20 million people, or about 1 in every 15 people in the U.S., speaks and understands little English.

Greenville Health System (GHS) is committed to serving the rapidly changing demographics of the region by developing a robust Language Services Department. GHS boasts one of the largest departments of this kind in the country and offers its services free of charge.

The Language Services Team

Mission: Bridge communication and cultures compassionately and innovatively for the patients, famillies and communities we serve.

To provide the best care, health care providers must be able to communicate effectively across languages and cultures. We ensure equal access, opportunity, and support for all who seek quality health services. Our goal is to make sure you receive medical information in a manner that you understand.

The Language Services Department of GHS has more than 40 qualified medical interpreters who provide services in person, over the phone or by video. These interpreters serve GHS hospitals, outpatient facilities and physician practices.

In addition to Spanish, here are some of the most commonly requested languages:

  • American Sign Language
  • Arabic
  • Chinese
  • Korean
  • Russian
  • Vietnamese

In addition to these interpreting services, GHS is one of the few health systems in the nation that features a team of in-house Spanish translators. This team translates a wide variety of GHS documents to ensure that patients with LEP (Limited English Proficiency) or who do not speak English have equal access to print materials.

Services for the Deaf

GHS provides interpreting services for deaf and hard-of-hearing patients using both in-person and video-remote interpreters.

Our video interpreting service provides the patient with a view of the interpreter through a computer screen. It helps hospital staff communicate with patients while waiting for an interpreter or in situations when Language Services cannot provide an in person interpreter.
