First health resource center linked to county library opens to public
Better informed patients leads to improved health outcomes, so Greenville Memorial Hospital opened a new Patient & Family Resource Center. It is the first health resource center in the Upstate to be linked to Greenville County Library System.
“The need for this center stems from the fact that more patients and families want to take an active role in managing their health,” said Suzanne White, vice president of patient care services, chief nursing officer and president of Greenville Memorial Medical Campus. “We also know that a better informed patient leads to improved health outcomes.”
The center is staffed by a medical librarian and offers an array of consumer-level medical information in English and Spanish both onsite and through the Greenville County Library System.
Medical books chosen by the library and the hospital’s Planetree Patient Education Team are housed in the center and coded in accordance with the Dewey Decimal System. Since books cannot be removed from the center, this system ensures the same books are available and can be picked up from one or more branches of the Greenville County Library.
“Greenville County Library has been a great partner in making this resource center a reality for our patients, their families and our community,” said White. “Their expertise in making complex medical information more accessible and understandable to consumers is invaluable.”
Pamphlets, support group information and two computers linked to medical Web sites and CarePages are also housed in the center. CarePages is a free Web service that enables patients and families to share news and receive supportive messages while in the hospital.
This center represents Greenville Health System’s commitment to patient- and family-centered care and is part of a network of other health-specific resource centers located in the Main Lobby of Greenville Memorial Hospital by the fountain. Other centers include the Turrentine Heart Education Center, Cancer Resource Center and Ronald McDonald Room.
