Didactic Teaching

Daily conferences are scheduled throughout the educational year in both general and subspecialty areas of pediatrics. The conference schedule also includes an ongoing review for the pediatric board examination. Conferences are supplemented by daily inpatient teaching rounds, morning report, daily outpatient case reports, weekly grand rounds, and literature reviews. Residents are encouraged to attend courses and seminars off campus and are reimbursed for reasonable expenses incurred during educational leave.
The didactic curriculum for our pediatric residency has been developed into an intensive board review course utilizing Nelson’s Textbook of Pediatrics. A combination of case-based lectures, independent study, and monthly test-taking practice sessions are employed. Each period focuses on one or two organ-systems to promote increasing depth of knowledge. In addition, simulation center exercises mirroring the lecture series are conducted each period. The series repeats every 18 months, so that each pediatric resident will complete the course twice during residency. During study breaks each winter and summer, residents will attend lectures covering ancillary topics such as child advocacy, global health, practice management, ethics, and community resources. Intern orientation topics, patient simulation exercises, and PALS review are also planned for this time. Independent study is encouraged and incentivized through annual monetary awards given to residents who complete all practice tests throughout the year.
The program provides Nelson’s Textbook of Pediatrics for all first year residents, Medstudy Pediatric Board Review Core Curriculum for all second year residents, and Laughing Your Way to Passing the Pediatric Boards for all third year residents.
Weekly morning report, grand rounds, and case-based clinic and nursery lectures supplement this intensive board review curriculum.
All residents actively participate in an evidence-based Journal Club fostering the development of critical appraisal skills. Each resident is mentored through the critical appraisal process with the end result of a completed Critically Appraised Topic (CAT).
All senior residents prepare and give grand rounds and morning report during their third of training.
