GHS Facilities
Greenville Health System
- A 1081-bed regional referral center, GHS draws patients from northwest South Carolina and also significant numbers from northeast Georgia and western North Carolina
- Greenville Memorial Hospital, the GHS flagship, is the largest acute care hospital in South Carolina, serving over 1 million people each year
- GMH, a non-university teaching and research hospital, is a satellite teaching campus for third- and fourth-year medical students from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine; GHS also has a teaching affiliation with the Medical University of South Carolina
- GHS’ research highlights include the following:
- The region’s only dedicated Oncology Research Institute
- Biomedical research collaborative partnership with Clemson University
- More than 500 active clinical and research trials
- GHS is a high-volume health network providing the exposure and experience that residents seek. In fiscal year 2002, the following occurred at GHS:
- 44,708 patients admitted
- More than 40,000 procedures performed
- 1.2 million patients in outpatient clinics treated
- GHS offers the largest cardiovascular program in South Carolina, performing more procedures than any other health system in the state
- In FY 2002, 14,508 vascular procedures and 7,373 cardiac catheterizations were performed
- GHS also has the largest women’s program in the state
- In FY 2002, more than 5,600 babies were delivered and 3,500 gynecologic procedures were performed
- The largest children’s program in the state, GHS Children’s Hospital provides comprehensive care to over 80,000 patients every year
- Nationally recognized Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
- The Upstate’s only Pediatric Intensive Care Unit

- One of the first in the United States to offer videoscopic saphenous vein harvesting
- One of the first in the United States to perform octopus bypass surgery
- First in South Carolina to use Biosense, which maps heart rhythm problems
- First in South Carolina to use the chili tip cooled ablation system to correct heart rhythm problems
- First in the Upstate to offer minimally invasive CABG
- First in the Upstate to use intravascular ultrasound
- First in the region to offer Center for Joint Replacement
- First and only in the Upstate to offer orthopaedic oncologist
- First and only in the region to offer fellowship-trained, board-certified urogynecologist
