GHS launches innovative medical training academy for young people
July 26, 2010

To help meet the Upstate’s growing healthcare needs and attract young people into the work force, Greenville Hospital System University Medical Center has launched the GHS Medical Experience Academy, a pipeline for students interested in advanced training in health care. The debut class includes 12 rising high-school seniors, but GHS envisions the program expanding down to the elementary level and up to college.

Community celebrates major trail section opening

The GHS Swamp Rabbit Tram Trail is making forward leaps with next week’s opening of a major section between Travelers Rest and Greenville. It’s the newest link in a proposed network of greenways that could one day span Greenville County and extend as part of a state-wide mountain-to-sea passage. Advocates say the local trail is already revitalizing communities, growing tourism and making citizens healthier with every walk, run and ride.

Greenville Memorial Hospital receives national stroke award

Greenville Memorial Hospital has received the American Stroke Association’s Get With The GuidelinesSM–Stroke (GWTG–Stroke) Silver Performance Achievement Award. The award recognizes Greenville Memorial’s commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of stroke care by ensuring that stroke patients receive treatment according to nationally accepted standards and recommendations.

Surgeon receives grant to provide colerectal cancer education
April 15, 2010

Dr. Brian McKinley, a surgical oncologist with Greenville Hospital System University Medical Center (GHS), recently received a $2,500 grant from the Betty Ann Moore Community Grants Program, which is supported by the Center for Colon Cancer Research at the University of South Carolina, to provide colorectal cancer education in Greenville County.

GHS receives grant from Komen to educate, save lives

The Mountains to Midlands Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® has awarded a $75,000 grant to the breast health program at Greenville Hospital System University Medical Center (GHS) to provide free mammograms, diagnostics and biopsies to underserved women in Greenville County.

Local cancer program receives national accreditation

The Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons has granted Three-Year Accreditation with Commendation and an Outstanding Achievement Award to Greenville Hospital System University Medical Center (GHS) for its efforts to provide quality care to cancer patients. GHS is one of only 82 programs nationwide to receive the Outstanding Achievement Award.

St. Baldrick's Foundation awards $50,000 grant to GHS
November 19, 2009

St. Baldrick's Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to raising money for childhood cancer research, awarded a grant of $50,000 to the Bi-Lo Charities Children’s Cancer Center at Greenville Hospital System University Medical Center (GHS) in Greenville, SC. These fall infrastructure grants provide institutions with resources to make more research possible and treat more kids on clinical trials, their best hope for a cure.

Breast health program first in Upstate to receive national accreditation
October 13, 2009

The breast health program at Greenville Hospital System University Medical Center (GHS) recently received a three-year/full accreditation designation from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons. GHS’ breast health program is the first in the Upstate to receive this accreditation.

GHS Board of Trustees approves $1.4 billion budget for FY2010

The board of trustees of the Greenville Hospital System University Medical Center (GHS) on Tuesday approved a nearly $1.4 billion total operating revenue budget for fiscal year 2010. The budget, which begins Oct. 1, increased 12 percent over 2009’s $1.2 billion projection and reflects a 3 percent price increase.

On October 19, the Challenge to Conquer Cancer cycling team will leave Greenville and bike 1,500 miles to Austin, Texas, in an effort to raise money for cancer research. The group, recruited by the Palmetto Peloton Project (P3), is made up of five teams of five cyclists. The team will leave Greenville on October 19 and arrive in Austin on October 23.

The board of trustees of the Greenville Hospital System University Medical Center (GHS) on Wednesday approved an approximate $1.2 billion total operating revenue budget for fiscal year 2009, which begins Oct. 1. The new budget increased 12 percent over 2008’s $1.1 billion projection.
