GHS has seven ACGME accredited medical residency programs and five fellowship programs and is the training site for 57 third and fourth year medical students from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine.

In 2006, GHS became the 97th member to join University HealthSystem Consortium (UHC). To become a part of UHC requires demonstrating excellence in service and teaching.
In 2010, GHS received National Accreditation for its human research protection program (IRB and Research Compliance) from the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Program (AAHRPP).
