Each year’s schedule is compliant with RRC rules and regulations. The first year resident is primary care physician for teaching service patients. Training Components
As a resident in internal medicine at Greenville Health System, your advanced training will offer an excellent balance of learning in both inpatient and outpatient settings. You will be given opportunities to manage patients, learn and practice new procedures, and develop existing skills necessary for exemplary patient-physician relationships.
Inpatient Teaching Service
Three general medicine services, a pulmonary service, a critical care service, and an inpatient cardiology service. Inpatient teaching services also respond to calls for consultation on patients admitted to other services. These are your patients, not the faculty's. When not on service, PGY-1's have no call or weekend responsibilities.
Outpatient Opportunities
Another of the unique strengths of our program is the on-campus Medical Center Clinics, private offices, and satellite clinics that are sites for our program’s outpatient component. These experiences offer our residents a chance to encounter and learn about a variety of patients and illnesses. PGY-1 residents will spend half a day each week in their own continuity clinic and provide follow-up care to patients originally seen in the hospital and to patients who are followed for ongoing ambulatory care. Upper-level residents spend two half days in continuity clinic when not on inpatient services.
During the one-month outpatient assignments, regularly scheduled morning conferences emphasize important outpatient topics, such as preventive care, health maintenance, vaccinations, and screening procedures. Residents attend subspecialty clinics while rotating in their respective subspecialties. Another component that sets our program apart is that we offer specialty ambulatory rotations in less traditional areas, such as ENT, orthopaedics, geriatrics, PM&R, ophthalmology, and GYN.
