
Health Sciences Library
Greenville Hospital System University Medical Center (GHS) Health Sciences Library provides Greenville County health professionals information to support patient care, education, and research. With over 30,000 volumes, 400 current print subscriptions, Internet open access sites, 2,000 electronic journals, electronic databases and indices, and a staff including three Master’s level librarians, finding access to relevant and current medical information is quick and easy.
In 2007, the Library won first place in the Medical Library Association's annual nationwide competition for creative promotions of library services during the celebration of National Medical Librarians month.
The library is located on the first floor level of Greenville Memorial Hospital adjacent to the lobby.

COMPUTER CAPABILITIES:
Greenville Hospital System staff visiting the library has access to 16 desktop and 8 laptop computers. Each computer has Internet access, Microsoft Office Software, and Power Point. In the library computer classroom, 6 individual desktop computers are used for instructional classes on medical information on the Internet and the library’s electronic services.
ELECTRONIC RESOURCES:
A variety of databases, full-text resources, and electronic books are available for GHS staff. All resources with the exception of UpToDate, are available through any computer with Internet access at home, office or on any GHS campus. Examples of resources include:

Since the electronic materials are accessed through a contract and licenses with the supplying company, they are available to staff only. See Electronic Resources for a list with links to free medical databases and books.
RESEARCH AND REFERENCE:
With 3 Masters' level librarians, the staff can locate important information in a timely manner. In-depth searches from a variety of databases are offered to all GHS employees at no charge, same day or while you wait. Patient care topics are given priority. Reference assistance includes answers to reference questions using print, online and internet sources as well as assistance with verification of citations & identification of journals for research and publication.
BORROWING POLICIES:
Health professionals who are employed by or affiliated with GHS may check out material from the Health Sciences Library for a period of two weeks and renew as needed. Journals and reserve books do not circulate. Lost or damaged material must be paid for by patrons. Students from local colleges and universities as well as the general public may use materials in the library during regular hours.
DOCUMENT DELIVERY:
Books, copies of journal articles and audiovisuals can be borrowed from other libraries. This automated system is set up between the GHS Health Sciences Library and the National Library of Medicine with both geographical location and fees as factors. The cost determined by the lending library is $5 to $15 and is passed on to the patron. Selected journal articles can be accessed electronically while print articles are received in 3 to 5 days.
PHOTOCOPYING:
Two copy machines are available in the library for patron use. Copies are 10 cents per page. Departments within the system may set up an account or transfer funds for these charges.
FAX:
Patrons are encouraged to fax or e-mail requests directly to the library. Articles needed for emergency patient care decisions that are not in our library can be e-mailed or faxed from other libraries often within the same day.
TABLE OF CONTENTS SERVICE:
The library staff will keep physicians and staff informed on current publications by performing regular author/subject searches or by photocopying table of contents of journals as they arrive in the library. Some table of contents can be e-mailed.
INSTRUCTIONAL OPPORTUNITIES:
The Health Sciences Library staff offers presentations on library services as part of conferences, seminars, and departmental and medical staff meetings. Orientations and tours are scheduled as requested for new students, residents, medical staff, and managers on both a group and an individual basis. Classes are offered regularly at no charge on Internet searching, medical information on the Internet and searching PubMed, the National Library of Medicine’s database.
SPECIAL COLLECTION:
A satellite library at Roger C. Peace Rehabilitation Hospital contains material on rehabilitation medicine and is open from 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
AUDIOVISUAL EQUIPMENT:
Videocassette players and slide viewers are available for viewing material in the library. All audiovisual equipment remains in the library. Call the GHS audiovisual department to check out AV equipment.
