Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics Fellowship Program
The DeLoache Fellowship in Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital of the Greenville Hospital System University Medical Center is a 3-year ACGME accredited training program that offers a wide range of training and research activities. This flourishing program is part of the dynamic and rapidly expanding Children’s Hospital where faculty are enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge and experience as well as developing new and innovative programs.
Our fellows have close contact with the 5 developmental-behavioral pediatricians as well as the 4 doctoral-level psychologists on the faculty. The Division of Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics is part of the Gardner Family Center for Developing Minds that also includes Pediatric Neurology, a strong collaboration with the Greenwood Genetics Center, and other related pediatric specialties.
The division receives over 2,000 new referrals each year for the evaluation of children with developmental and behavioral concerns that assures fellows manage a wide variety of complex and challenging patients. The Fellowship is designed to provide increasing levels of clinical responsibility, starting with infants, toddlers and preschool children and advancing to school-age children and adolescents in the second year. The fellows spend a majority of their clinical time during the first year at the Center for Developmental Services (CDS), a unique co-location of agencies serving preschool-aged children. This allows close interaction with the local school district, early intervention agencies, NICU follow-up, and a family mentoring program. The Children’s Hospital’s large (over 35 staff members) pediatric developmental therapies group is also housed at CDS as well as a unique day care program for medically fragile children. The Children’s Hospital has a wide range of pediatric subspecialties. We also work closely with psychiatrists in the community as well as the Shriners Hospital for Children, which is co-located with Greenville Memorial Hospital. The fellows spend time with these and other specialties as part of their second and third year rotations.
In addition to these extensive clinical opportunities, our fellows have many opportunities for developing their skills in teaching and research. The Pediatric and Internal Medicine-Pediatric program at the Children’s Hospital consistently attract residents of the highest caliber and the Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics fellows are actively involved in their teaching as well as presenting at our annual regional continuing medical education conference. Fellows also instruct medical students from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine as well as undergraduate “summer interns”.
There are multiple opportunities for research. Faculty from the Arnold School of Public Health of the University of South Carolina provide guidance and support for research projects. We also have an agreement with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in nearby Atlanta, where fellows can conduct research if they wish. There are also numerous opportunities for clinical research in the fellows’ area of interest. Our division collaborates with a number of local and state agencies and organizations with a focus on promoting healthy child development and early identification and intervention for children with developmental problems.
Thus, in addition to the appealing geographic location of Greenville, with its scenic attractions and mild climate, the Fellowship provides a well-rounded and flexible training experience that will prepare subspecialists for a successful and productive career, whether it be in fulfilling the great clinical demand for this specialty or in adding to the body of scientific knowledge in this field through an academic career.
