High-Risk Pregnancy

Women with pregnancy complications or who are at risk because of underlying health factors or advanced maternal age receive the highest level of care in the region at Greenville Hospital System University Medical Group (UMG) Department of Obstectrics and Gynecology Divsion of Maternal-Fetal Medicine.

Maternal Fetal Medicine physicians are obstetricians/gynecologists with two to three years of additional training in the treatment of pregnancy complications. They bring exceptional skill to cases in which the expectant mother has a health condition such as diabetes or high blood pressure, carries multiple babies, or experiences premature labor or other threats to pregnancy. They provide pre-conceptual counseling for women with medical problems, previous complications, and, in conjunction with Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility of GHS University Medical Group, Department of OB-GYN, recurrent pregnancy loss.

Inpatient care is provided at Greenville Memorial Hospital, where five board certified maternal-fetal medicine specialists are available around the clock.

The first perinatal diagnostic ultrasound center in South Carolina to receive national certification by the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, the Maternal Fetal Medicine division is also a training and research site for General Electric 4D ultrasound technology.

Services available to our patients include the following:

Genetic counseling and testing
4D ultrasound evaluation and treatment
Critical care obstetrics
Separate unit for high-risk pregnant women, staffed by nurses skilled in OB critical care
On-site Level III NICU
Genetic sonograms
Screening for chromosomal abnormalities
Fetal echocardiography
Antepartum testing, including Doppler flow velocimetry
Invasive and non-invasive fetal diagnosis and treatment

Pregnant women with medical emergencies who are transported to Greenville Memorial Hospital may be admitted to the High Risk Antepartum Service. The High Risk Service is covered by a Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialist 24 hours a day.

Our high risk unit is located on the sixth floor of Greenville Memorial Hospital, right down the hall from Labor and Delivery and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. We have approximately 23 beds, and five members of our nursing staff on every shift with special training in caring for women with high-risk pregnancies.

There are many other healthcare professionals who are available to assist you, including social workers, nutritionists, physical therapists, lactation consultants and a chaplain. You will have the opportunity to speak with our neonatologists and visit our 56-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
