A warm welcome from Greenville in upstate South Carolina!

I have the pleasure and privilege of introducing you to the Greenville, SC and the Family Medicine Residency Program at Greenville Health System. Choosing a residency program is a very important step in your medical education. Our fully ACGME‐accredited program offers an institution that will provide you with the tools needed to become a qualified professional, and poised physician. If your goal is to become a hospitalist, an ER or Urgent Care physician, or a traditional Family Medicine Physician, we have the tools and resources to help you attain that goal. A day in the life of a family medicine resident is one that reminds you of why you chose medicine in the first place; a cradle to grave physician providing compassionate and comprehensive care to all. I hope this brief overview provides you with our program’s strengths and highlights as well as what the Greenville area has to offer.

Greenville is a flourishing city that is nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and known for its natural beauty and mild climate. We are a short drive from the coast and to the metropolitan areas of Asheville, Charlotte, and Atlanta. However, with so much to offer, you may never want to leave the city. Scenic Greenville boasts dynamic recreational activities, including hiking, whitewater rafting, fishing, rock climbing, golfing, tennis and biking trails. It is a hub for outdoor activities, hosting the US Cycling Championships annually. Shopping is easy, with a variety of shops and malls nearby and downtown’s weekly farmers’ market. The multicultural downtown and vibrant art community provide an assortment of festivals focusing on art, music, food, and cultural diversity. The Peace Center offers exciting Broadway Shows and concerts, and the Bi--‐Lo Center hosts numerous concerts and sporting events. Fluor Field is home to Greenville’s very own professional baseball team; an affiliate and training squad for the Boston Rex Sox. The only one of its kind, the cantilevered Liberty Bridge reveals panoramic views of the Reedy River, which runs through down town. Whether you are taking a stroll through Falls Park, attending a Greenville Drive baseball game, or dining out at one of the many fine restaurants downtown, Greenville provides affordable family outings and activities. For those of you with children, Greenville has high quality schools, churches, children’s museums, and an excellent local zoo. It is a very safe city. For collegiate sports enthusiasts, Furman University, Clemson University, and University of South Carolina are very near by. With a desirable cost of living and a growing economy, Greenville also has a plethora of employment opportunities for spouses. It is the home of many manufacturing industry giants, including General Electric, BMW, Boeing, Michelin, Fluor, and Lockheed Martin.

The expansive, 1200+ bed Greenville Health System is the 7th largest provider organization in the nation. It consists of seven campuses with primary and specialty clinics and an exemplary Level 1 Trauma Center. The first class of our very own medical school, USCSOM Greenville, has begun matriculation and the new state‐of‐the‐art facility is located on our main medical campus. We are already engaged in training our next batch of young, aspiring physicians. GHS, which serves more than one million patients annually, is the largest acute care hospital provider in South Carolina, and was ranked in the U.S. News “Best Hospitals” for three consecutive years.

Our Family Medicine Residency is a stimulating and dynamic program. It is one of the original programs at GHS. The Center for Family Medicine (CFM) is an unparalleled building, that is conducive to our learning environment. Our residents have close interactions with other residency programs and outstanding interpersonal relationships with one another and our diverse faculty and staff. We work to achieve medical excellence through a diverse curriculum that prepares our graduates to be well‐rounded physicians. We have educational, didactic sessions that are geared towards comprehensive medicine. Residents have access to the state-of-the-art simulation center, located within the new medical school, for hands-on learning. Our family medicine residency also offers research and mission trip opportunities. In addition to resident offices and treatment rooms, CFM also has the following: minor surgery/procedure room, colposcopy room and a casting room. Our Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system provides us with the resources to improve the quality of patient care with diligence and efficiency. We have a supportive team-centered atmosphere that focuses on excellence in high-quality, evidence-based patient care. We strive to be in the forefront of changes occurring in the health care system, especially in primary care.

The opportunities to learn as a physician, to grow as a person, and to experience a quality lifestyle are all available in Greenville! I hope this information is helpful to you as you begin the application process. If you have any questions, please contact us.

I look forward to meeting you in Greenville, South Carolina!
