Our fully ACGME-accredited program offers an institution that will provide you with the tools needed to become a professional, qualified, and poised physician. A day in the life of a family medicine resident is always gratifying and educational. We hope this brief overview provides you with our program’s strengths and highlights what the Greenville area has to offer.

Greenville is a flourishing city that is nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and known for its natural beauty and mild climate. We are a short drive from the coast and to the metropolitan areas of Asheville, Charlotte, and Atlanta. However, with so much to offer, you may never want to leave the city. Scenic Greenville boasts dynamic, recreational activities including hiking, whitewater rafting, fishing, rock climbing, golfing, tennis, and biking trails. Shopping is easy with a variety of shopping centers and downtown’s Saturday Market. The multicultural downtown and vibrant art community provide an assortment of festivals focusing on art, music, food, and cultures. The Peace Center offers exciting Broadway shows, and the Bi-Lo Center hosts numerous musical concerts. The only one of its kind, the cantilevered Liberty Bridge reveals panoramic views of the Reedy River. Whether you are taking a stroll through Reedy Falls Park, attending a Greenville Drive baseball game, or dining at one of the many fine restaurants, Greenville provides affordable family outings. For those of you with children, Greenville has quality schools, churches, children’s museums, and a local zoo. For collegiate sports enthusiasts, Furman University, Clemson University, and University of South Carolina are very close by. With a desirable cost of living and a growing economy, Greenville also has numerous employment opportunities for spouses. It is the home of the manufacturing industries: GE, BMW, Michelin, Fluor, and Lockheed Martin.

The extensive, 1,210-bed Greenville Hospital System consists of five campuses with primary and specialty clinics and an exemplary Level 1 Trauma Center. It has educational affiliations with USC and MUSC. GHS serves more than one million patients annually, is the largest acute care hospital in South Carolina, and was ranked in U.S. News Best Hospitals for two consecutive years.

Our Family Medicine Residency Program is a stimulating and dynamic program. It is a highlight of what Greenville Hospital System has to offer. The Center for Family Medicine (CFM) is an unparalleled building that is conducive to our learning environment. Our residents have close interactions with other residency programs and outstanding interpersonal relationships with each other and our faculty and staff. We work to achieve medical excellence through a diverse curriculum that prepares our graduates to be well-rounded physicians. We have educational, didactic sessions that are geared towards comprehensive medicine. Residents have access to a first-rate simulation center for hands-on learning. Our family medicine residency also offers residents mission and research opportunities. In addition to resident offices and treatment rooms, CFM also has the following: minor surgery room, colposcopy room, stress test room, and a casting room. Our Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system provides us with the resources to improve the quality of patient care with diligence and efficiency. We have a supportive team-centered atmosphere that focuses on excellence in high-quality patient care.

The opportunities to learn as a physician, to grow as a person, and to experience a quality lifestyle are all here in one place. We hope this information will be helpful to you as you begin the application process. If you have other questions, please feel free to contact us.
