An arterial duplex of the upper and lower extremities is an ultrasound test that uses sound waves to measure blood flow through the arm or leg arteries to be examined. A vascular technologist will apply gel to the leg or arm, then will slide a hand-held sensor across your skin to obtain images of the arteries.
From these images a medical professional can determine the size and shape of each artery in question as well as if the arteries have narrowed or become blocked. Blood pressure in your arms or ankles may be taken to help determine the amount of blood flow in your arteries. You also may be asked to perform a simple exercise test to further evaluate your arteries.
Your test results will be sent to your referring physician who will discuss the findings with you and review treatment options.
