A Doppler or Duplex Ultrasound exam uses sound waves to create images of your arteries and veins. It is also used to record blood flow sounds within the arteries and veins. During this procedure, gel is applied to the leg or arm, then a registered vascular technologist (RVT) moves a hand-held sensor across the skin to obtain images of the veins. The test will measure the size and shape of each vein in question as well as evaluate the blood flow. A medical professional will use this information to determine if the vein has narrowed in size or has become blocked. You may feel a pressing sensation when the RVT performs compression techniques.
Your test results will be sent to your referring physician who will discuss the findings with you and review treatment options.
