Program Overview

The Greenville Hospital System/University of South Carolina School of Medicine Internal Medicine Residency Program is a three-year training program, fully accredited by the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education. We select 10 residents to train here each year.

One of the unique features and major assets of our program is the close relationship our faculty builds with residents. The size of our program is ideal for extensive interaction between faculty and residents. We are proud of the collegial atmosphere in our program, an atmosphere born of mutual respect between residents and attendings. Yet, in our mentoring of residents, we strive to create an appropriate balance between providing supervision and granting the residents independence in patient care. We consider our residents fully practicing physicians and, consequently, expect them to be committed both to providing the best care and to learning all they can.

We are proud of our graduates, many of whom enter a general internal medicine practice or hospitalists practice. Some elect to complete subspecialty training in cardiology, pulmonology, critical care medicine, endocrinology, allergy/immunology, gastroenterology, hematology/oncology, nephrology, or infectious diseases. These graduates have found rewarding positions in programs at the Medical University of South Carolina, Georgetown University, The University of South Carolina, the University of Chicago, The University of Mississippi, The Medical College of Georgia, Case-Western University, The Medical College of Virginia, Bowman-Gray School of Medicine of Wake Forest University, and many other prestigious institutions.

Affiliations

We are affiliated with the Medical University of South Carolina and the University of South Carolina. Currently there are 24 medical students from the University of South Carolina who spend their entire third and fourth years of medical school at Greenville Hospital System, which serves as a clinical medical campus for the medical campus.

Fellowship Placements

Several of our graduates have chosen to pursue further training in medical subspecialties, and our program's solid medical training has earned them slots in competitive fellowship programs.
