Diabetes Self-Management Program

The Diabetes Self-Management Program at Greenville Hospital System helps diabetics learn to manage their disease, avoid complications, and reduce their risk of heart disease – the leading cause of death among people with diabetes. Recognized by the American Diabetes Association as a center of excellence for diabetes education, this program has proven results of an average 50 percent reduction in risk for serious health problems.

Patients learn the following in group classes and one-on-one counseling:

  • Disease pathophysiology
  • Medications
  • Complications
  • Smoking cessation
  • Exercise
  • Nutrition
  • Monitoring and setting goals for blood glucose
  • Insulin use: how to store, adjust dosage for illness and exercise, and inject insulin
  • Insulin pump therapy: how to program the pump, initiate therapy, and troubleshoot problems

Also available:

  • A special class for pregnant women with gestational diabetes
  • Vocational rehabilitation in adaptive strategies to stay healthy and productive at work.
