Spinal Cord Injury

As a division of Roger C. Peace Hospital-Rehabilitation, the Spinal Cord Injury Program strives to provide comprehensive care to persons with spinal cord injuries due to either trauma, degeneration or disease, enabling the persons served to achieve optimal health and physical function. Patients with neurological impairments or related diagnoses such as Guillain-Barre’ Syndrome or Multiple Sclerosis will be considered on an individual basis. The Spinal Cord Injury Program will serve as part of the continuum of services offered to persons with spinal cord injury through shared therapists, consistent treatment protocols, training of acute personnel and community education.

The program can improve the quality of life for patients with spinal cord injuries or related disorders such as multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, Parkinson’s disease, and Guillain-Barré syndrome.

The Spinal Cord Injury Program is the only program of its kind in the state accredited by the Commission for Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).

How does Roger C. Peace compare with the Nation?

The Spinal Cord Program admitted 58 patients in 2005. Most of the patients were admitted from Greenville Memorial Hospital. Patients were admitted from hospitals in the Columbia, Charleston, Spartanburg and Greenwood areas. A few patients were admitted from skilled nursing facilities and home.

The average length of stay for a spinal cord patient at Roger C. Peace was 21 days. The national average for other rehabilitation hospitals was 22 days.

Seventy-two percent of the patients admitted to the inpatient program were able to return home. For the national average of other rehabilitation hospitals treating spinal cord injuries 72% of their patients were able to return home.

Outpatient Services are offered to the spinal cord patient these services include: physical, occupational, and speech therapy; neuro-psychology; and case management

  • Average number of outpatient visits for an SCI patient in physical therapy was 75
  • Average number of outpatient visits for an SCI patient in occupational therapy was 50
  • Therapy sessions are scheduled for one hour two or three days a week depending the needs of the patient
