Cancer Research

Patients receive the most advanced cancer care in the region thanks to research conducted at Greenville Hospital System Cancer Center. Our dedicated researchers collaborate with CancerCenters of the Carolinas and the Greenville Community Clinical Oncology Program to bring patients the newest therapies in the country, including those that have been developed through our Oncology Research Institute.

The Clinical Research Unit of CancerCenters of the Carolinas, in partnership with GHS Cancer Center, is pleased to announce an expansion of their immunobiologic program. Recently approved by the Western Institutional Biosafety Committee, the Clinical Research Unit is now conducting early phase trials utilizing gene-based therapies for a variety of malignancies including lung, colon, and pancreatic cancers.

Gene therapy involves taking virus cells that have been neutralized (no longer can spread disease) to replace a sequence of DNA that created cancer cells. As this section of DNA is replaced, cancer cells become normal cells.

To receive approval to conduct gene therapy trials, the Clinical Research Unit had to meet stringent criteria, including the following:

  • Skilled staff of oncologists, scientists, oncology nurses, and others with expert training and experience in conducting early clinical trials
  • A self-contained, state-of-the-art facility that meets the highest safety standards for biological research and patient safety
  • Proven reputation in conducting efficient and expertly documented clinical trials
